Could someone who would know give me some cultural differences between Ukrainian and Russian Orthodox people?  I'm not talking as much about liturgy or rubrics, but the way that the two groups practice their faith.

For instance is Ukrainian Orthodoxy less strict or judicial about things as are the Russians?  Do Ukrainians tend to approach their faith in a less legalistic way then Russians (Or visa verse)?

Just interested.

Men may dislike truth, men may find truth offensive and inconvenient, men may persecute the truth, subvert it, try by law to suppress it. But to maintain that men have the final power over truth is blasphemy, and the last delusion. Truth lives forever, men do not.

Oh, Robb...where to begin....

I don't know much about the Russian Orthodox people, but, let me tell you a few things about us Ukrainian Orthodox people.

Ukrainians are extremely faithful.  (Not including those who have been spoiled by the Soviet regime...God willing the next generation will revert back to the ways of the faithful.)

We do not like change. Not one iota.
We frown on any new/modern innovations when it comes to the Church.

We follow all the Traditions and traditions (and we have many) handed down to us through the years.

As for being less legalistic....you will only find that with folks who have intermarried with non-Orthodox, or who work and live amongst non-Orthodox and therefore, are influenced by their environment.  These few will not see the benefit in fasting, will not attend services, etc.

However, these are simply individuals, and not the Church.

The Ukrainian Orthodox Church stands strong.  She, her hierarchs, clergy and faithful support and defend all the canons of the True Church.

Robb, while I have my reservations as to various motives of the Moscow Patriarchate, in all honesty I do not think there is a "difference" between Ukrainian Orthodoxy and Russian Orthodoxy.  I believe we both hold true to the laws handed down.

I would have no qualms about attending, confessing or receiving the Eucharist in a Russian Orthodox Church.

Now, if only Moscow would keep their eyes on, and hands strictly in Russian territory, and out of other countries...but, that's for a different thread.

hard to say, as Russian Orthodoxy owes so much to the Ukrainians.
Question a friend, perhaps he did not do it; but if he did anything so that he may do it no more.
A hasty quarrel kindles fire,
and urgent strife sheds blood.
If you blow on a spark, it will glow;
if you spit on it, it will be put out;
                           and both come out of your mouth

Liza--thanks for your excellent advice. I will certainly move this thread to politics should we cross that line. Your friendly moderator.
