As many of our long term OC.netizens know, it is the long standing tradition of this site to have a 24-hour hiatus on Clean Monday. This hiatus is intended to give to our posters an opportunity to devote their day to prayer and repentance, and not have this site distract them in these critical pursuits.
This post is intended to inform and remind you that the forum will be down when Clean Monday hits the United States' East Coast, which is the time zone for the server of this site.
It is my fervent prayer that we will put aside the debates and jokes, veiled ad hominems and random posts for this day, so that all of us can devote ourselves to things that actually matter.
May the Lord have mercy on us all!

I wish this board would close down for the entire first week of Great Lent and then reopen on the Sunday of Orthodoxy.
One day is not enough time.
On second thought, maybe like Met Jonah, we should retreat for the duration of Great Lent.

Well, the Internet as everything else in life, is what you make of it.
I for one, enjoy this site immensely. I have grown as an Orthodox Christian thanks to the knowledge shared on this forum. I've learned things I would never have known otherwise.
Hiding from the forum, is just that "hiding". You have to learn how to deal with all the different personalities, your time management, etc. It's just like dealing with people in the office. You have to be able to handle each situation, and get the work done.
I think it's a great idea to close down for a day... If nothing else, we feel the "loss" of the forum...and it makes us realize the gravity of the day all the more strongly. However, I don't think it needs to be shut down for a longer period of time.
If someone feels the site is a detriment to their fasting, then they need to utilize self control and just not log on.

My lenten resolution was to try and stay off the board for all of Great Lent, but I've decided to check, from time to time, what is posted on the Prayer Forum, so I can add those needing prayers to my daily prayer rule.

I quite agree with you, Maria. The Rainbow forum would be much to my liking. However, as I said "rainbow" forum I was hinting at a - um -contemporary misappropriation of the word. The Orthodox worshipful feast for the eyes was what hooked me on the Orthodox Church. |

I would love to create green and read versions of the site as well. The only thing holding me back is time. It takes awhile to create the right shades for the other templates, and I always have to tweak it because some people complain it's hard on their eyes, etc.

If we're going to do green for St. Patrick, then it would have to be in the summer when the OC celebrates his feastday. When is his feast day? On some Orthodox calendars I did see Mar. 17. I had always assumed it, until I had a discussion about it with someone a few years ago who insisted it was another day. Goarch (and a number of other sources) report it on March 17. I'll go check another spot... It's not in the Greek menaion on March 17... I'll try and find it in another place. It's odd, but the Greek menaion only has a Patrick (bishop of Proussa) on May 19, not on March 17, even though St. Patrick of Armagh (Enlightener of Ireland) was very much pre-Schism. |
