How does one convert to the Orthodox church?
« on: March 05, 2011, 01:48:45 PM »
Hi, I am an adult convert to the Roman Catholic Church.
I was wondering how one converts to the Orthodox church?
And how does one know which Orthodox church to convert to?

Thanks,
Leisa

If you are in North Ameica, you find a priest whose bishop is on this list:
http://www.assemblyofbishops.org/directories/bishops/
Question a friend, perhaps he did not do it; but if he did anything so that he may do it no more.
A hasty quarrel kindles fire,
and urgent strife sheds blood.
If you blow on a spark, it will glow;
if you spit on it, it will be put out;
                           and both come out of your mouth

If you are in North America, you can also use this tool to locate Orthodox Churches:

Quote from: Orthonorm
if Christ does and says x. And someone else does and says not x and you are ever in doubt, follow Christ.

Οιδε εκζητούντες τον Κύριον
Ουκ ελαττωθήσονται παντός αγαθού

The priest that I just began correspondence with (Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia) said it varies between each person. In summary, he told me that the amount varies between each person, with the baptism taking place after the spiritual father deems that the catechumen is ready. He also said there is no formal class, like RCIA(the RCIA is my addition), that one would go through.

EDIT: Here is the Parish finder for ROCOR

We're all one church, just arranged right now into different nationalities and such, so I'd go with whatever is closest to where you live.

Leisa:

Just start going to church. Visit every Orthodox church in your neighborhood, find one you like, and speak to the priest about your interest. He can give you sound cousel.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions.
Unfortunately, we live out in the country in a small town and there are no orthodox churches.
However, there is an Orthodox Monastery.  I think I could go to the Monastery and ask them, I have
been there once before.  I don't like to pester the nuns but I'm sure they could tell me what I should do.

Yes, if they are your closest outlet then go there, by all means.

Leisa:

That's what the nuns live for--to be 'pestered' by someone wanting to join the church!

Which monastery, if I may ask?
