I thought it was an otter (otters have an association with Saint Cuthbert, for one). Could be wrong though.

Otters are in the weasel family

I'm aware, the otter association came up with me specifically because of Saint Cuthbert. But it looks like Denise's ermine anecdote is the most likely.

Ah, I see...

Yea, it's probably an artist's mistake then.  That's too big to be an ermine, if I'm not mistaken

I think Denise's anecdote holds the key to deciphering this drawing too, but I agree that the proportions are off.  Ermines are small, but vicious.  Otters have more of a sleek, aquatic note than the creature in this drawing.  Is the saint supposed to be feeding it whatever those little things on the branch are?

St. Herman is boring anyway.  He should be holding a scroll or teaching orphans.  But the the dimesnsions of said scroll or child is bound to be off.
Happy shall he be, that shall take and dash thy little ones against the rock. Alleluia.

Hey, it's not unreasonable to ask questions or try to figure things out when someone posts a sketch of a saint blessing a stoat with no context or explanation.  We're not all super familiar with St. Herman's hagiography, and I for one am glad that this conversation brought out the anecdote about the familly of ermines.  As far as proportions being off, nothing is more irksome than some modern Coptic photoshop "icons" I've seen where the head/body proportion is way off and the figure depicted looks like a bobblehead.

After a recent closed-door meeting with Feline Defense Force (FDF) minister Akira Naito, President Trump today issued an executive order forming a new special forces group, to be made up primarily of elite FDF Samurai cats. "These cats are the greatest, just the best," the President said. "Just wait till you see what they can do. Amazing!"

Wow that looks pretty good. We say that in English too so it must be a pretty universal sentiment.
