I'm surprised you didn't go for the "St. Nicholas and Arius" joke.

You may not be familiar with the Geto Boys and their hit song "Damn It Feels Good To Be A Gangsta".  Those are the cleanest lines in that entire song.  Besides, getting slapped by St. Nicholas is like getting shot.

See Arius crumpled on the floor?
Happy shall he be, that shall take and dash thy little ones against the rock. Alleluia.

That picture is a little ironic considering that many Orthodox (Fyodor Dostoyevsky among them) have harshly criticized Rome for, ever since the Donation of Pepin, allowing its bishops to exercise "temporal powers" including the use of force. Also, aren't Orthodox monks required to lead an essentially pacifistic existence? I don't think the East was ever too keen on the whole "Knights Templar" thing.

Of course, maybe the clergyman in the picture (is he a priest or bishop? I think he's the latter because of the cross he's wearing, but I'm not sure) is merely blessing or inspecting the handguns and he isn't planning to use them himself. Pictures don't always tell you people's intentions.
I'm not going to be posting as much on OC.Net as before. I might stop in once in a while though. But I've come to realize that real life is more important.

Well, it's not totally unprecedented. There were a few monks who received permission to fight alongside St. Alexander Nevsky, but the sources do treat it like it was something highly unusual.

Can't blame him except Russians make lousy hand guns.

No. Transportation issues. Thus far, everything I've known about Orthodoxy has come from the internet (Sad, I know).

He looks like a priest to me. In the Antiochian archdiocese, proto-presbyters wear a pectoral cross that looks very similar to that. I don't know if it is the same in Russia or where ever that picture is taken.

I am trying to figure out if that is the table of oblation or the altar. Either it's very tall or the bishop is very short. Cool picture though.
