I've seen this in Serbian churches, but they generally put the money around the frame, rather than on the face of the icon!
You sound like a professional who knows what he's talking about.  That's because you are.

O, I see. I live in different culture, and I'm eager to know the other culture especially the tradition ( with small 't') from Orthodox church all around the world.
Thank you for explanation.

It's donation for the church - as you described, people geenrally put money around the frame if there is not special hole in the desk with icon. But yeah, I've seen personally, in reality such situations like in the picture.

Just made this meme based on a similar one I found on Facebook. It's stupid but here's one of the only places I can post it.  :P

The original image had the primitive Spongebob as Hobbes's man (who was described as a wolf) and the cute one as Rousseau's (the "noble savage"). I replaced Hobbes for St. Augustine's, due to his emphasis on the bondage of free will to sin, and Pelagius, due to his apparent negation of ancestral sin. Then I put St. John Cassian as a "middle term".

Very nice.

I AM Serbian. So I've seen very similar situation (worse than this one presented in the picture I'm posting below; I was ashamed actually to take pictures of icons covered by money so much, that my friends and I weren't able to kiss the icon)

As I said, it's donation for the church, and people sometimes put it "as they want", or just after one person that put the money, another person comes and tehre are more and more money that there is no place to not cover the saint's head. So, maybe the better solution are baskets (probably the best, I've seen it in Serbia too, however it's more popular in non-Serbian churches) or holes in the desk with icon (as I said, also popular in Serbia).

In our Church they do the same, but there is people who collect them and put them into box. My priest tell me to put the money on the icon when once I was at his Church.

There is this worry that someone is attacking the Serbian Orthodox Church with this picture.  This is not the intention I have seen.  it is simply making light of some of the cultural flaws we find, and one can find these not just in the Serbian Church, but any other Church.  People should rest assured and not become too overly sensitive of these pictures.  There is no malicious intent.

I knew that.
My grandmother IS also a Serbian. She said the money is used to only in a frame where there is no box. SAME Serbian DIFFERENT point a view.
There is Serbian community here and we talked about this picture ( and I wish you were here because it was funny) Some laughed when seen it and some kinda said o my God! when seen it.
One told a story that even he ever stolen the money from the box when kissed the icon or something.
For people in Asian maybe we will a bit over react if see such thing. I hope this could be a good discussion between us in this forum.

For people like me who didn't know that in Serbian church there is tradition to put offerings near the icon, may be it will be seen negative, how come someone treat the icon like that.
But somehow I understand now that I believe there is no indication to make a joke in that picture.

Thanks for the  posting and good explanation

Then may be what comes in my mind when saw the picture is why the money should be collected in a part of His holy face, when the other part is empty. There is also a Serb a friend of mine in here. I will ask him his opinion.
Thank you for explanation Dominika.

Happy shall he be, that shall take and dash thy little ones against the rock. Alleluia.
