Look what I found: A mod uniform

The memory of God should be treasured in our hearts like the precious pearl mentioned in the Holy Gospel. Our life's goal should be to nurture and contemplate God always within, and never let it depart, for this steadfastness will drive demons away from us. - Paraphrased from St. Philotheus of Sinai
Writings from the Philokalia: On Prayer of the Heart,
Translated from the Russian by E. Kadloubovksy and G.E.H. Palmer, Faber and Faber, London, Boston, 1992 printing.

The Coptic Church would probably shout heresy for that icon.  We went from lion to a house cat.  :P

Maybe the painter had not seen a lion in his life and he was told they look kinda like cats.

Reminds me of a joke:

A farmer returns from a trip to Africa. Friends ask him what did he see there:
- I've seen zebras.
- What are those?
- Do you know how horses look like?
- We do.
- They are the same but striped.
- Oh, what else did you see?
- Giraffes.
- What are those?
- Do you know how horses look like?
- We do.
- They are the same but with longer necks.
- Oh, what else did you see?
- Crocodiles.
- What are those?
- Do you know how horses look like?
- We do.
- So crocodiles do not like horses at all.

I assume the nun has a choice whether to be a nun or not and thus whether to wear it or not; I would also assume that the 'Muslim girl' has no choice about being... er... a girl, nor does she necessarily have a choice about whether her culture requires her to wear it. Well, I guess she has a choice, she could take it off and... suffer the consequences. She could also try to leave (or flee) the country. It's a tiny bit different for her than for the nun though, at least in most cases in the west these days. A better comparison would be with the practice from past generations where someone would be  exiled and forced to join a Christian holding center monastery and abide by their rules. Of course you could point to examples of many women wanting to follow such a custom, though tbh using this as a justification of it seems as absurd to me as when, ~ a century ago, people pointing to women who were fine with not voting as evidence that women had no need for the right to vote.

Well, we could turn the argument to whether women have a choice to wear or not wear headscarves in Church...

It depends on which society we're talking about, really. Muslim women in the West and in the more moderate Middle East tend to have more of a choice about whether they want to wear it or not.

Well this logic would work if it was only 'completely Muslim' countries where people harass women for 'being oppressed'....and if they were the only group that covers their hair and is modest.

are Amish women oppressed?  Are Orthodox Jewish women (who cover with either a wig or scarves) oppressed?

What about Muslims living in the US...who could pretty much take it off with very little repercussion from greater society. oppressed or devoted?

The issue is that westerners -assume- oppression when the words Islam, Muslim or Hijab are invoked.

All opinions expressed by myself are quite tragically my own, and not those of any other poster or wall hangings.

You DESERVE to wear a tie daily; it is not about showing decency in the presence of others nor honor or respect or a willingness to submit to tradition or authority....NO, it is about keeping your vocal cords warm so you may fill the Senate Chamber with your voice as the orators did back in the first century. After all, Tri, you can be long winded too.

80% of Icelanders identify as Lutheran. Maybe they're all really Lutheran Atheists, who knows?

(Also, paganism never really died out in Iceland. Elsewhere neopaganism is mostly a LARP/historical reconstruction phenomenon, but Iceland is quite possibly an exception. Pagans are only a minority in Iceland, but quite a visible one.)
I'm not going to be posting as much on OC.Net as before. I might stop in once in a while though. But I've come to realize that real life is more important.
