On another thread Trisagion mentioned Brazilian carnival and that brought good childhood memories.

So here is a less known instance of it, the Bate-Bola, a traditional kids costume in the suburbs of Rio:

A week or so before Carnival starts kids start dressing up like that and walk around the neighborhood in little "gangs" usually with parents accompanying from a small distance. The idea is just to have fun with friends, sometimes scare smaller children by hitting the ball on the ground very loudly (hence the name "Bate-Bola", "Ball hitter").

Good times. :)

...you can imagine so-called healing services of the pigpen. The books that could be written, you know: Life in the Pigpen. How to Cope in the Pigpen. Being Happy in the Pigpen. Surviving in the Pigpen. And then there could be counselling, for people who feel unhappy in the pigpen, to try to get them to come to terms with the pigpen, and to accept the pigpen.

Interesting.  They seem to be blessing grapes, as we do, and not (just?) flowers.

And from the size of them, watching that food-stuff is important.

I came across a nun with a rifle once and she posed for a photo. A priest there saw me taking the photo and he didn't think it was a good idea. I still got the end of the gun poking out under her car door though.

Hipster Orthodox church converted from a garage.

Just kidding.  It's very interesting, architecturally; especially with their budget.

Just from the practical point of view, they are going to run out of space with that amount of chairs. But I do appreciate the creativity and courage to have a non-traditional-looking church. Assumingly they didn't have time and money to build grandiose cupolas but at least they have a church.

From the articles, it mainly did come down to what could be afforded, especially using the pre-existing structure rather than tear it down and start from scratch.  Good planning like this (and why should every Orthodox parish have to look like Hagia Sofia or Christ the Savior?) is way much better than rushing to get a storefront or a mobile home and be stuck there for years and years due to lack of growth.

I don't care for those chairs either (I've been to plenty of churches that had those instead of pews), but at least they can be moved out of the way or in different configurations.

Although regular services draw approximately 80 visitors, holiday services draw twice as many. Rather than design the sanctuary for the greater number, one wall of the sanctuary has two large sections that swing open to the fellowship hall. These operable walls stow completely allowing for the fellowship hall to be used for overflow seating during holiday services. This flexibility allows reflects the modest budget and resourcefulness required of the design.

The congregation has grown by 30% since the new worship space has opened, fostering the dream of a larger sanctuary to be located on the same site to house 200 worshipers. http://www.archdaily.com/207501/st-nicholas-church-marlon-blackwell-architect/
