Canterbury Cathedral. So beautiful, so breathtaking. I love the Western art, buildings, tradition, rituals, heck I even love the Western theology  ;D

I will continue to label myself Christian, and Anglican, in respect for my baptism. Even though I still struggle with doubts. I don't believe it is fair to dismiss it that easily because of some doubt.

The paint seems to describe Hell, right ? In case it does, yes, I've always imagined Hell to be something like that, it is scary but what is more scary than being separated from God and live your eternity with the Devil ?

It is a painting of the damned being cast into hell. I can't say I understand the emphasis of it in western theology.  Much better to focus on the goodness of God and union with him than trying to scare people out of hell IMHO.

Sure, we need to focus on God's love and goodness. To me, I don't follow Christ because I'm afraid of Hell or because I want Heaven, but because I love Him, I love Jesus Christ, I fell in love with Him and want to spend my life and eternity with Him. You can say like " I want to be with Him, in the good and the bad, in health and sickness...etc ".  But that doesn't mean Hell doesn't exist, God is God, and He means what He says, and when He said there is Hell, lake of fire...etc then He meant it.

I don't deny the existence, but I find the western preoccupation of it in their theology and art to be disturbing .

The Western ethos was often a shockingly misanthropic one.

Look at all the priests!

Those are demons who tried, and failed, to snatch the priests souls in the tollhouses but all they got were those funny hats.
"But we must live in the world, having peace in our soul. We must live amidst strangers; we must suffer, struggle, and firmly believe. We must seek our consolation in prayer and not doubt the love and compassion of God. He is above everyone and everything."

Ah yes, St. Mark's in DC area (really more like Fairfax, VA).  They're one of the biggest Coptic churches in the US.  Interestingly enough, the Christ in this icon, which is in the sanctuary, is completely different from the Christ in the iconostasis:

Makes me wonder if they had two different iconographers for their church.

The new Coptic iconographer that is getting a lot of fame these days (at least on the East Coast) is the one in St. Mary's in East Brunswick, another grand church in the US:

Vain existence can never exist, for "unless the LORD builds the house, the builders labor in vain." (Psalm 127)

If the faith is unchanged and rock solid, then the gates of Hades never prevailed in the end.

Here is Orthodox Icon of Hell...

I was going to post this very icon as an example of Orthodox hell-iography (don't know the term if there is one).  From my travels, it appears that these "icons" are most common in rural and/or backwater towns.  In that respect perhaps one could conclude that the context is similar to that of "hell-fire n' brimstone" preaching in country-town evangelical communities.

Love is not blind; that is the last thing that it is. Love is bound; and the more it is bound the less it is blind.

It just shows that for the branch of unionist ecumenism that believes in the falacy of union betwen Orthodoxy and Non-Chalcedonean, "Orthodoxy" is a synonim for "not-Western" only. They are philetists and nothing more.

I rather liked the original Icons at St. Mary's more. These seem like poor imitations of Western art.

He's one of my best friends growing up which is why I drive an hour to go to St. Mina's on Sundays. We need to get together one of these days.

Oh, I know St. Mary's very well, since before the Church was built. I'm not against Western Art. In fact. I love it. And am not a particular fan of the "neo-Coptic" Iconography either, but I'm not at all impressed with these works.

You mean the separate EO and OO unities or something else?

;)

It just shows that for the branch of unionist ecumenism that believes in the falacy of union betwen Orthodoxy and Non-Chalcedonean, "Orthodoxy" is a synonim for "not-Western" only. They are philetists and nothing more.

Good. You remembered "Captain". You shall be rewarded. :)

It is a beautiful church.  I used to serve there, but then the parish priests in Holmdel stole my heart.

He's one of my best friends growing up which is why I drive an hour to go to St. Mina's on Sundays. We need to get together one of these days.

You probably know who I am, but I do not know who you are lol (at least I can't connect the username to the face) :)

Like a boss  ;)

I will continue to label myself Christian, and Anglican, in respect for my baptism. Even though I still struggle with doubts. I don't believe it is fair to dismiss it that easily because of some doubt.

Well they do look like stock photo corporate bosses.

St. Mary's in East Brunswick, another grand church in the US

I love that church!

I rather liked the original Icons at St. Mary's more. These seem like poor imitations of Western art.

I disagree that they're badly done. That level of accomplishment has gotten pretty rare today.

They are, however, very White.

I was able to find some old pics showing the old iconostasis of the same Church:
