I really liked this picture of President Dr. Bashar Al-Assad next to a clock of St. George:

I do hope this is not considered too political for the public forum.

Well, I certainly do not worship him. Though, I do admire him in many regards. It is also extremely arrogant of you to associate my respect for anyone with worship, considering you do not know the first thing about me. But, I shall leave you to whatever convictions you choose to uphold.

I like the Russian Church, Russian churches, and the spread of them throughout the world.  That said, they do have a knack for putting obnoxiously Russian buildings in places where they look extremely out of place.

They are beacons of Russian imperialism either. Their are examples of weird Chinese sense of aesthetics.

Not really, unless by "Chinese" you mean kitsch/cheap/flamboyant stuff (which would be a Eurocentric racist perspective).  ;)

You're misremembering. 8) Go back through the catalogues on Lugnet... they have almost always had designed sets. When I was growing up in the 80s just about every set that was bought for me in the store (Castle, City, Space, etc.) was of a specific design. The only time I got random pieces was from yard sales (though thankfully I got quite a lot of those). Though admittedly Lego did go through a period in the mid-00s when they were making more and more big pieces so as to inflate the size of the products. Lego almost went out of business about a decade ago... if licenses with Star Wars, LOTR, The Simpsons, etc. is how they stay afloat then that's fine with me.

EDIT--Though I'm not paying $200 for any Lego set these days, let alone a Simpsons one.

I don't really have a problem with all the licensing, but it is a lot different than the generic themes that they used to have and we grew up with.  This set isn't bad, but my daughters are into the Friends theme which has a ton of little specialized pieces, making it hard to make your own stuff. I'm sure you remember back when we were growing up, the back of the box had pictures of other things you could make with the set.  You didn't get instructions for those, but it was fun to see if you could replicate it. Of course, after that, it just got dumped in the big bin with all the other legos, waiting for new creations to arise from the pieces.

Ahh, memories...
