didnt know that there was such thing as the piece of the True Cross.  cool

There's enough of them to build an ark.

There's a piece at my local Romanian Orthodox Cathedral.  It's just a tiny sliver.

But plenty of churches in Europe have pieces the size of staves or yardsticks.

Really?

Perhaps, this "new" wood laid upon, or touched the True Cross....and thereby has acquired some of it's properties?

Interesting.

I have heard that if you only have a few drops of holy water left, you can fill the container back up, and even those few drops spread the properties/holiness to the new water.

Maybe, they do something similar with the new wood.

Yes, I believe that was Luther's observation, and that was in Rome alone.  I think he also wondered why there were 20 something Apostles buried in Germany alone when there were only 12 total.

In any case, this was given to us by an Orthodox Archbishop from the Jerusalem Patriarchate.  I guess that if I can believe anything that they have to say, I can also believe that this piece is real.

One of the picnic areas at Fred Howard Park in Tarpon Springs. Down the path a bit is the waterway and peninsula at the other end of the park. Stunning views. Worth a visit. Smiley

What I really "liked" was the sign in back that states "service".....pronounced "service", instead of using the Ukrainian word that means service.

They are kids. Not all are even 18.

The performance consists of several family stories (gathered among performers' families) from the interwar and war period.

Oh, I see.  One cannot enjoy watching beautiful young girls performing in any legitimate art.  So, why did you post the picture?  And, since you found it necessary to mention their age (as if I could not tell), I will tell you this:  when it comes to seeing women in a "nasty" kind of way, I prefer them to be at least 30, and better toward 40.  Young girls do not excite me in that way.  Older women, on the other hand . . .

People in Poland must look really good at 60, if you think that crowd is mostly composed of "old" people.

I thought it was a good mix of old and young and male and female.

Michal, I honestly knew you would come back with some negative comment, but, age wasn't what I had expected.  Wink

In the 1960s, a Communist official during the Khrushchev persecutions walked into a church.  "Look, it is full of old men and women, the church won't last another generation!" he declared.  One of the old ladies replied, "The Church has always been full of old men and women, because we keep making more of them to replace the ones that pass on!"

Let's face it, younger people are generally a bit too 'distracted' with life to always come to church and push there way to the front row.  Babushki like the front so they can hear, and the young people like the back so they can duck in and out.

One picture would never really show what a community is like.

Ha ha!  Father, you hit the nail on the head!

The old folks really don't hear well, and the echoes make it worse, so, they DO stand closer to the front!

....and of course, the younger ones come and go.

And well they deserve to be in front!  Where would the Church be without them? There are a couple of old Russian women that come to the Church that I attend.  There is a certain beauty to the lines in their face, and an emotion that I cannot describe in their eyes.  Sometimes, when the younger of the two (probably in her 60's) communes, something comes over me and I cannot keep the tears out of my eyes.  I asked the priest once if she was a Saint.  He said that he believed she was.

It depends on the parish. Our church babushki 20 percent at the most. Only children receive Communion every Sunday from 50 to 100.

You must have bad eyes.  I took a good look at the picture when I got home (larger monitor) and I am even more impressed than originally.  Not only is the Church full (thanks be to God), but it looks like less than one third are over 60.  It is good to see so many middle aged people there.  Pictures from most Eastern European Churches that I see are filled with nothing other than old people and very young adults.

I do have to say that I am impressed with the photographs from your parish.  What is remarkable about the photograph of the young ladies is the number (as well as that they are undeniably cute young ladies).  We have five Orthodox parishes in the city of Omaha.  I don't think that there are that many young people in all of them combined, let alone simply girls of that age.  I would assume that given the gender mix of the general population, that you have at least a similar number of young men in your parish.  That number of younger people would be, to me at least, a sign of a healthy parish.
