I'd treat it as a kind of symbol of big crisis of Catholicism in Ireland that has been there now quite a long time - my sister used to live there for some time and she was telling various things about this crisis even 14 years ago...

To be absolutely fair to the fair lady, I really don't think her intention was to deceive. Yes, PF drew bigger crowds at some points in his visit (were they ever as big as in the 1979 picture above? I have no idea), but I don't think the Pope in 1979 ever drew such an anemic crowd as at that particular point this year. I think the picture works if treated as a meme that serves a symbolic purpose, as Dominika said.
Christ my God, set my heart on fire with love in You, that in its flame I may love You with all my heart, with all my mind, and with all my soul and with all my strength, and my neighbor as myself, so that by keeping Your commandments I may glorify You the Giver of every good and perfect gift. That's a pretty darn big reduction, and I hopefully say this without any hint of Schadenfreude :(

For a few seconds, I was reading each of the third ones as "Catholic hot," etc. I was even all ready to comment that I didn't get the joke, until I took a second look.

I... genuinely don't know what that says about my psyche...

Found an interesting picture taken in my neighbourhood in an English-language page

"May the Lord our God remember in His kingdom all Holy Catholic Apostolic Church, which heralds the Word of Truth and fearlessly offers and distributes the Holy Oblation despite human deficiencies and persecutions moved by the powers of this world, in all time and unto the ages of ages."

Thank you.

Here's a picture I found in a Russian forum and I can't figure out where and when it was taken and who it is of.

I love that sweater and that beard, though.

Classical sweater for old and being in medium age men in Polish villages. Not so long ago - true also for towns and cities.
Looks like something my dad wears and I used to as well.
Looks like we did keep one Polish village tradition after all. ;D

Construction of a church in 1875. Might be an Old Believer church as I found it on an old belief forum, and the tented rooves -however,  the presence by one man who is wearing a military style cap and no beard leads me to believe it may be synodal.

Of course, I'm not sure how oppressive the Tsarists were of the Old Believers in 1875 and this could be sanctioned.
“God,”
The words rumbled:
“There is much suffering,
But the church is alive. "

“How long, Archpriest, are we to suffer thus?” I answered: “Until our very death, Markovna!” And she replied, with a sigh: “So be it, Petrovich, let us plod on.” - Life of Avvakum by Himself

You mean both Old and Nikionian at the same time? I didn't know that ever happened. I mean, I know about Edionvertsy, but I guess I just assumed that they all converted (not really the right word, I guess) to the MP as entire parishes.

I wonder how they negotiated the practicalities.

Co-believer is a translation of Edinoverie, I believe.

It seems English-speaking Co-Believers use a more usual word to translate Edinoverie. I recall reading something like "agreement" or "concordance" in a Facebook group. Not sure of the actual word though.

I'd say the best translation is "united in the faith" or "of the one faith"; that's btw quite ridiculous, as it's not the faith that divided the two groups, but the rite.

Yeah, this would be a more literal translation, but I think the word is okay, it kinda backlashes on the idea that the Starovery are actually practicing an older faith.

Speaking of Edinoverie, the only Edinovertsy bishop alive, John of Caracas (ROCOR), concelebrated Divine Liturgy in Argentina for the enthronisation of Bishop Cyril of Dioclea, watching over Serbian parishes in Latin America. Easy to recognise him.

What will they do when he dies? Appoint an Old Rite successor or just continue on under a Nikonian bishop?

Probably appoint a successor, Bishop John was a New Rite hegumen before being appointed a vicar to Bishop Daniel of Erie.

His headgar in Latin America shows, that now Old Believerism (my word) doesn't make any sens beyond Russia. Well maybe also for immigrants of Russian descent.

His headgar in Latin America shows, that now Old Believerism (my word) doesn't make any sens beyond Russia. Well maybe also for immigrants of Russian descent.

I'm sure many in Russia also found it odd that these Romans were pushing their art style and vestments in the theme of their emperor on them during the Christianization of Rus.

Nastasya, Nastasya, be
patient and do not cry:
Not every happiness
Comes in the clothing of fortune.

St. Avvakum, pray for us!

St. Ambrose, pray for us!

Fur-lined hat doesn't make sense in most of Latin America.
Happy shall he be, that shall take and dash thy little ones against the rock. Alleluia.

The thing is Latin America includes the Russian world just like it includes the Germanic world, the Chinese world, the Levantine world, etc. It's the common civilisational mission of the New World.

Bishop Cyril of Dioclea

Did Metropolitan Kallistos get a new titular see recently?

Just stumbled upon this picture of Metropolitan Rafael (Motovilov), of the Old Calendarist RTOC. He also uses a variation of Pre-Nikonian vestments for some reason.

So, do schemamonks really have a chord wrapped around their shoulders that prevents them from raising their arms? How would that work for a bishop?

Christ my God, set my heart on fire with love in You, that in its flame I may love You with all my heart, with all my mind, and with all my soul and with all my strength, and my neighbor as myself, so that by keeping Your commandments I may glorify You the Giver of every good and perfect gift. Amen.
