Cicero - On Academic Scepticism (again)

There's a book being published at the end of August on Potamo of Alexandria and the Emergence of Eclecticism in Late Hellenistic Philosophy, but it's over $90... anyone with some extra money want to contribute to the education of poor old Asteriktos?  Tongue

Nothing to Envy: Ordinary Lives in North Korea - Barbara Demick

I have a love hate relationship with my Kindle. I love the thrill of the hunt at bookstores, and I love lying in bed, flipping through the pages of the book. But when I find a book that I want, and there's an e-book version of it, I have the "WANT IT NEED IT MUST HAVE IT NOW" mentality. And then I click "Order."  Undecided It feels too easy.

Just read Balkan Ghosts: A Journey Through History by Robert Kaplan again and that got me on another Balkan history kick.  So now I'm finally ready to tackle Rebecca West's Black Lamb and Grey Falcon: A Journey Through Yugoslavia.  At 1150 pages, I've got my work cut out for me.  In addition to that, I'm also reading Armenian Golgotha: A Memoir Of The Armenian Genocide, 1915 - 1918 by Fr. Grigoris Balakian.  This is a personal, first-hand account of what the author, a priest in the Armenian Apostolic Church, went through.  It's been compared to Night by Elie Wiesel (which I read last month and was amazing- I highly recommend it!).

Next month, I plan on reading:

 1. The Caucasus: An Introduction by Thomas de Waal.
 2. The Balkans: Nationaism, War, and The Great Powers, 1804 - 1999 by Misha Glenny

How were the two books on Balkan history?

It's one of my favourite subjects.

Re-reading an old book, M. E. Kerr's Deliver Us From Evie. Her writing is just so honest and straightforward. I think I've read this book about 15 times since I first read it at 17.

Kindle:

Haydn by J. Runciman
The Jungle by Upton Sinclair
Homilies on the Gospel of St. Matthew by St. John Chrysostom

Non-Kindle

Isn't that the best! A lot of my favorite books are free -- and some that I've wanted to read! I'm trying to read more Russian Lit., since I've read quite a bit of nonfiction already.

The Brothers Karamazov, again. I find something new in each reading, and can pull something deep from each page.
In the midst of reading this in Russian, second time overall (First time in English). It's gonna take a while. Get back to me next year, or later.

Also reading a book on wine, and one on entry-level Ancient Greek, in preparation for a course in a few weeks.

In the midst of all this, and prompted by an article I read, I decide to re-read the epilogue tonight in English, just 'cause. I sat with it for a while, and then my wife told me that my son had woken up and wanted me to say goodnight again. I went in, and he, unprompted, kissed me on the forehead.
As you are obviously very familiar with this epilogue, you might imagine how this chain of events affected me.

Fixed.

That is worst thing I believe gay men have done in this country, create media that have made the minds of women sick about many things, especially their relationship with their bodies.

Big disconnect between the gay male understanding of the beauty of the female form and the straight male, exceptions of course.

At least Michelangelo was honest about his antipathy toward having to deal with the female form and tried to discourage have to present it by doing a horrible job and making them basically transvestites:

LOL very true about gay men and the fashion industry. They definitely do not make clothes for MY body type!

I'd explain why I read it, but the main point is that I read it, ironically or not.  Cool And as a comedian said, it's like the cooler best friend that makes you feel like **** after talking to her for an hour. It's true. Despite my defenses, my insecurities go through the roof. And I totally need that.

Only a therapist could pontificate on why I actually read the magazine.
