I love the thrill of the hunt at bookstores, and I love lying in bed, flipping through the pages of the book. But when I find a book that I want, and there's an e-book version of it, I have the "WANT IT NEED IT MUST HAVE IT NOW" mentality. And then I click "Order."  It feels too easy.

Just read Balkan Ghosts: A Journey Through History by Robert Kaplan again and that got me on another Balkan history kick. So now I'm finally ready to tackle Rebecca West's Black Lamb and Grey Falcon: A Journey Through Yugoslavia. At 1150 pages, I've got my work cut out for me. In addition to that, I'm also reading Armenian Golgotha: A Memoir Of The Armenian Genocide, 1915 - 1918 by Fr. Grigoris Balakian. This is a personal, first-hand account of what the author, a priest in the Armenian Apostolic Church, went through. It's been compared to Night by Elie Wiesel (which I read last month and was amazing- I highly recommend it!).
Next month, I plan on reading:
1. The Caucasus: An Introduction by Thomas de Waal.
2. The Balkans: Nationaism, War, and The Great Powers, 1804 - 1999 by Misha Glenny
How were the two books on Balkan history? It's one of my favourite subjects. |

I sat with it for a while, and then my wife told me that my son had woken up and wanted me to say goodnight again. I went in, and he, unprompted, kissed me on the forehead. At this point, I have a new Cosmo magazine that I haven't read yet. I know that life is bad when all I want to do is read trashy women's gay men's magazines. Fixed. That is worst thing I believe gay men have done in this country, create media that have made the minds of women sick about many things, especially their relationship with their bodies. Big disconnect between the gay male understanding of the beauty of the female form and the straight male, exceptions of course. At least Michelangelo was honest about his antipathy toward having to deal with the female form and tried to discourage have to present it by doing a horrible job and making them basically transvestites:  |
