I've heard it's customary to keep a blessing cross at the icon corner to venerate after your evening prayers.  is this true?

I was given an Ethiopian wooden blessing cross as a gift, and I hold it when I say the prayer of the cross: "Let God arise and let His enemies be scattered..."

Um... What's a blessing cross? (Unafraid of sounding stupid.) Is it a regular cross or something else, something special?

Its a small cross that you can hold in your hand and bless yourself during prayer. Kind of like the cross that a priest blesses us with after the Liturgy.

Examples:

Ethiopian (similar to the one I have):

Anyone know what these ones are made out of? Are they stone and heavy, or just cut plastic and light?
