Theoretical Physicists, Cosmologists, and Atheism
« on: February 17, 2011, 11:26:08 AM »
In the fields I described above, there seems to be a general trend of atheism.  Have there been any known theists in cosmology or theoretical physics?  I remember my undergraduate physics professor was a devout Catholic, but I'm not sure whether he understood cosmology and the theoretical physics behind it or not.

Or is this a case of the most vocal of the cosmologists are the atheists?

Doesn't quantum physics, from Newtonian physics, actually help's in the defense of Christianity?

The scientist who developed the "Big Bang Theory" was a Catholic priest:

You are right. I apologize for having sacked Constantinople. I really need to stop doing that.

Indeed, but we're not in Newtonian physics anymore apparently.  Things seem to be more complicated due to some recent discoveries, which lead to many mathematical reworkings.  I'm talking about people in Hawking's particular profession of theoretical physics.  Do we have any believers in this field?

Undoubtedly. Ever hear of John Polkinghorne?

Well, no, but I just googled him.  It's amazing how much you don't hear of such people, and make the stereotype of an atheistic scientific community.

Freeman Dyson would probably be one of the most influential, theistic theoretical physicists.

Wow...these people are really never known, at least by me maybe.  Am I alone in the fact that when people think of cosmologists and theoretical physicists, the most famous ones are the atheists?

There is a sizeable group of famous cosmologists who are believers, but the majority of them make up the "old guard" and are not producing the amount nor quality of research to keep them in the limelight.   Honestly, besides Paul Davies, I cannot think of one who has written something that I have read recently.
