spiritual or mental illness

How does a person discern whether thoughts/feelings are spiritual in nature or whether thoughts/feelings are symptoms of mental illness?

If that person has a priest, speak with him. He can assist with those things which are spiritual, and may refer the person to seek psychological assistance if he or she has such needs.
