Gah... What Is This?
« on: January 28, 2011, 10:44:04 PM »
Sometimes I get those stupid pop ups saying "Your computer may be infected, blah blah" and it's not my anti-virus software, but spam/virus/mal/whatever. Is this from the sites that I'm visiting*, or is it something already present on my computer. Running anti-virus software comes up with nothing.

* And no, I'm not talking about those kinda sites  :P I just had it happen to me when I was at a popular pic hosting site.

That my friend is Malware! DO NOT DOWLOAD the software it is trying to lead you to. This is a perpetual problem with computers running windows operating software. It is especially bad with windows XP because so many computers are running it and it is essentially obsolete. This type struck my old computer which I am converting to a linux os machine to extent it's life. Please keep in mind that the folks who write these malware programs do so to get money out of YOU so take this seriously. Be wary of banner ads, these are as bad as porn sites for malware content for XP machines today. They exploit weaknesses in Java and Adobe to infect your computer.

I would recommend going to PC magazine's website and look for their review of effective free anti malware programs and download a few onto a thumb drive from a known clean computer. I would try running the scan in safe mode (F8 when you power up) to prevent the baddie from working against you to clean the computer. Also be aware a lot of these programs will disable anti-malware software so you may be in for a fight!
Better yet download Fedora 14 or Umbutu and switch to a linux OS to get rid of malware forever.

Best of luck

When that happened to me I flushed my cache and ran the antivirus I bought for my computer.  That cleaned off the Malware that tried to pop up and install itself.  I never download rogue antivirus programs like that.
