Hey ya'll,
It's time again..time to plan for SummerFest 04!
It would be very helpful if we could get a prelim headcount, of people who are going to attend, and those who might even be mildly interested in attending.
Some basic info as of now: Dates: Between June-August '04 Over a weekend, most likely 3 or 4 days in length. Location: East coast, as far north as NY, as far south as SC, might go elsewhere? Maybe. Cost: Would be as minimal as possible, but we would calculate lodging as amt of ppl/cost of place, cost for food, transportation, etc.
If you are interested in signing up, you can fire me either an email (email is in profile) or a PM, or just state it here on the thread. That way I can put you on the mailing list as we plan the process.
We have a new number of members since last year, so I am hoping we see some new faces this year.
Sincerely,
Robert

I would be interested in attending if not held on the east coast. Perhaps you should go for someplace in the middle of hte country, say Kansas? I say this not because I live in Kansas but because there are quite a few of us in this area of hte country plus those further west.

May I also sugget early June so that it is not a fasting period for anyone. Or maybe after July 11 for the same reason. I don't know how many fellow Old Calandrists are on here, but I am sure there are a few.

Ha ha ha... That's great. I'm interested in going. I may be in Russia all summer...but there's a chance I could attend the SummerFest (anything like Oktoberfest?) in mid to late August, or early June. If there's any way to set a date soon, that would be great as I need to plan my Russian flight within a week or so. What do you think about Boston or NYC? Boston and surrounding areas have a little of everything- Churches from almost every jurisdiction, city life, beaches a little north of the city, walden pond a close drive from the city, etc.

Pittsburgh! Plenty of Orthodox Churches- many traditions. -Eastern and Coptic (and those others, Byzantines, and of course, many RCCs). Monasteries and seminaries are in the area (and by mid summer baseball will not be a distraction if the Pirates are true to form).

I've got to be St. Vincent's Hospital's unpaid slave, I mean INTERN from May 17 to June 11, after which I will be working but can tell CVS where to go if they don't give me my days off for Summerfest And perhaps this is an un-ideal suggestion, but maybe we can have multiple summerfests, for those who are spread across the country and can't really make it to far away places that would involve airfare. I know I would hate to miss out on a weekend or more of food, fun, and orthodoxy simply because it's too far away We can make the admins go to all of them to be fair and balanced Kim

I like the idea of Pittsburgh...closer for those of us in the south and midwest. Kim's suggestion might be good as well, perhaps an OCnet Fest West in addition to the traditional eastern festival.

DC is nice, I like the idea of NY and also Pittsburgh.
Our main stumbling block is accommodations. Last summer was perfect as TomS graciously provided his apartment for the weekend. This time around though, we have to investigate venues of renting a suite of some sort or perhaps staying in a hotel. This presents some difficulty, as suites aren't that cheap, and well, if we have 15+ people in one suite, this obviously is problematic.
So, I am open to suggestions, publically or private, as to how we might best handle this. In the meanwhile, I am still searching for places that we can stay for cheap and comfortably.

As nice as a campground sounds, I don't know if we want to tolerate 3-4 days in the sweltering heat with minimal shower facilities and latrines for toilets.

Not all campgrounds are that primitive. The last one I was at(Hot Springs, NC) had a bathroom facility of 4 toilets(regular flush toilets on a septic system), 2 showers, and 2 sinks per 10 campsites. It was very adequate for our parish campout, but the showers did go cold from time to time. Well worth the $10 per night per campsite.

David: I'd be interested in a campout, especially if it was up here in NC. As you said, there are a few campgrounds, and I think a few of us (Frobie, Clint, myself, any others) would have a great time with some brews and a nice fire. So, perhaps we can develop this initiative separately. OC.net Campout 04 eh As far as the SummerFest goes, still lookin

Hey if the Fest ends up in NY, maybe my parents' log cabin in Chappaqua will be livable by that time, bringing in a few sleeping bags should be able to squish about 12 or so people with 3 bathrooms, and if people want to sleep in the living room, then even more Then we can all take a trip to see our beloved ex-President and our beloved NYS Senator! :smiley11:

What about regional summerfests? It is obvious that those in the mid west and west coast cannot attend an east coast summerfest.
So...why not have four different summerfest and share all the stories and pics online?
My suggestion:
North East: New York South East: Northern Virginia Central Zone: St Louis South West: Arizona

Sorry to say that I would love to open up my apartment so that everyone could come to DC again, however, my sister would not be as thrilled... :-( Imagine, she considers writing her PhD more important than OC.netfest. It woulda been great too, considering I live across the street from the Peachtree. Anyway, my summer is pretty open, not counting the last weekend of July & first weekend of August, as long as someone can give me a ride...

I would suggest an East Coast gettogether in DC area, a midwest getogether, and a West Coast if such is a possibility. The only problem is that all the administrators and moderators live on the east coast except for Prodromos John who lives in Greece So the other gettogethers would be bereft of administrator appearances

I really like Greg's idea of regional fests. For those of us in the midwest, getting back east would be a very great expense, thus impeeding a great many of us from making it. I would imagine it is even more so for those on the west coast.

Greg, The reason I don't think there's a need for a Northern Virginia and a NY gettogether is that the people coming in from Massachusettes (sp???) and such places can carpool and/or caravan with the people living in NYC and Westchester County NY as almost all the major road arteries go through that area

A West Coast Fest would be nice, Las Vegas has many deals for groups, there are Eastern Churches there also, though it is known as "Sin City", might be interesting.

The only problem is that all the administrators and moderators live on the east coast except for Prodromos John who lives in Greece I will be in Greece for the month of September. OC-Fest Greece! And the great thing is that since his wife is Greek, there is no WAY that she could turn us all away when we showed up that their doorstep. 'Course poor John will get his butt kicked when we leave. OPA!! Then from there we can drive across the border and go see Agia Sophia.

Christ is risen!
David suggested Pittsburgh. I don't know if he has lived in Pittsburgh or spent any time there. I lived there for 5 years. It is an interesting place.
Antiochian Village would be an option for somewhat local accomodations and that would provide a chapel and we could have some sort of services there or in a parish. Further, we could expand it and actually have some thought-provoking activity like a speaker. It could be a one-day program, breakfast, lunch and dinner with two talks a service and some time to hang out. The we would be back on our own.
I really think that whatever we do we should include: 1) prayer, and; 2) a speaker or a movie, etc., something to encourage us in our pursuits of Orthodoxy. Last year some of us attended some services together but it would be nice if we could do so as a group
IPitts does not however represent a closer destination for most of the South (at least not my part). I used to drive from Pitts to Atlanta and trust me, DC would have been better to Atlanta than Pitts.

I vote for DC, and see if Fr. Victor Potapov would like to give a talk...not just because he's ROCOR. Check out a brief bio. http://www.stjohndc.org/stjohndc/English/Who/OurPriest.htmAlso, Ania might be able to speak to him about doing this. Just a suggestion.

We need to have an OC.Net Winter Ski-Fest.
Out west would be a great place for that - Denver, Salt Lake, Seattle ... anyplace where there is a mountian and snow!

You guys enjoy your east-coast get-together! As a former easterner (Pennsylvanian) transplanted to the Northwest for the time being, I don't miss that humidity for all. If you want a beautiful summer venue, come to the Northwest in July or August -- 85 degrees, clear and sunny, lush greenery, a ROCOR monastery on an island in Puget Sound, stunning views of Mt. Rainier, and only 20% humidity.
Tom's idea is good, too -- a winter ski-fest Orthodox retreat. We could even (gasp) become Canadians for a weekend and go across the border to Whistler in B.C.

I used to live not too far away from you, Gregory2, in Portland, Oregon. I loved it there, but the job situation at the time was not good.
I probably won't be attending any Summerfest.
My experience here lately has not been that much fun, and I am pretty busy in the summer anyway.

gregory2, We lived for two years in Hood River, OR (until '91) and I must agree with you. I can't figure how I let my mother-in-law talk us into moving to PA. For a ski-fest, I prefer Mt Hood. And if in July I could see if I can still squeeze into my wetsuit for a little boardsailing again. Man, I miss that place. Demetri
