According to the article and another I read on CNN.com, Rep. Giffords has not died yet, so the title of this thread may be a bit misleading, unintentional though that may be. So as to not mislead others with the premature news of her death, I changed this thread's title to reflect more closely the facts related in the news articles.
Lord have mercy!

Just a reminder that, even though this prayer request is for a politician, we need to keep politics out of this thread and out of the Prayer Forum in general. Please use the Politics board for political discussion. If you don't yet have access to this private board, please ask Fr. Chris via private message.

Dr. Manny: Giffords Likely Faces Long Road to Recovery From Head Wound in ShootingArizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords is in intensive care following surgery at the University of Arizona Hospital for a gunshot wound to the head at close range. Dr. Manny Alvarez, senior managing health editor of FoxNews.com, said surviving a gunshot wound to the head is rare, but not unheard of – and Giffords is in for a long fight. Alvarez said the survival rate of a gunshot wound to the head is about 5 percent – and 3 percent of those who do survive will always have a neurological deficiency, such as memory loss or a lack or motor skills...

Latest stats, via CNN: 6 dead, including Fed. Judge Rule and a 9-year-old girl; 12 wounded, including Congresswoman Giffords. Suspect in custody and IDed; from what CNN quoted of what he left on the Internet, he sounds schizoid.

I've been listening to live streaming news coverage of this tragedy most of the day. It's a sad day in America. I pray for a full recovery for the survivors and God's mercy for the shooter.

A story with some background on one of those killed... Chief federal judge in Arizona was one of those killed in attackJohn Roll, the chief federal judge in Arizona, went to Mass on Saturday morning -- as he did most every morning -- before stopping by a political event hosted by his friend, Rep. Gabrielle Giffords. There, outside a Tucson grocery store, Judge Roll was fatally shot by a man with a semiautomatic weapon who also killed five others and seriously wounded Ms. Giffords. Judge Roll lived about a mile from Ms. Giffords's "Congress on Your Corner" event and may have learned about it from an automated "telephone blast" to the congresswoman's constituents, federal law enforcement officials said Saturday. He and Ms. Giffords had worked closely on security issues along the country's Southwest border...

Not suggesting that this is what you're doing, but a lot of people are discussing it in the wake of this tragedy, so I think it necessary to be proactive and nip this off before it actually becomes a point of discussion here.
The person who carried out this shooting needs our prayers just as much as the victims. If anyone wishes to pray for the suspect (in a non-judgmental manner), please do so. However, let us not speculate on this thread as to his mental state or his motives for acting out this murderous impulse (if he is indeed the one who did). There are other places on this forum where this is appropriate; the Prayer Forum isn't one of those. The Prayer Forum is a place reserved for prayer, so let's keep it focused on prayer.
Thank you.

Tucson, Arizona (CNN) -- They described it as "a miracle." Shot in the head less than a week ago, U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords opened her eyes briefly for the first time Wednesday, with her husband, her parents and other members of Congress in the room. "It was extraordinary," said Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-New York, who was holding Giffords' hand at the time. "It was a miracle to witness."
