What the heck is that weird Santa doing in the Indian Orthodox church?? It looks like their at the altar, but surely not... They tend to have characteristically poor aesthetic sensibilities. I've seen many videos of blinking "Christmas" type lights around and above the altar as well, and also face-microphones like at a Garth Brooks concert. |

 I don't think they are at the altar. They are cutting a Christmas cake, which I don't think is something you would find at an altar. Also, Indian altars, like Armenian altars, have steps on them ("gradines.") The table they are at is flat. It seems to be a post liturgy celebration of some sort. |

Looks to me like the altar - and so what! They look like they've celebrated the Liturgy and are having a good time. Before we judge other cultures' aesthetic sensibilities we should first look at the impact in their faces. The joy of the Nativity is there to be seen. When people of other cultures do things with a sense of irony it seems to get lost on the "developed" world.

And yes this is shot after the liturgy. I will post a pic to clear it up for you  See the table ,its well below the altar, just not so evident in the other photograph. But this is how its arranged in all Malankara churces. |

You echo my sentiments. One of my biggest gripes growing up in the Church is how quick some are to proclaim a superior attitude about their particular view of what the Church is or how her Holy Traditions, as well as secular ones, are to be expressed. All of us (excepting our Armenian old calendar brothers) have now observed the Nativity and we will soon approach the Sunday of Zacchaeus, the beginning of the Triodon and the Great Fast. it is a good time to reflect on the scripture readings of the Sundays leading up to the Fast. Christmas Greetings indeed to all of our fellow believers in India and around the world! |

For all tour kind information. At present there are three Oriental Orthodox Churches in Indian. Indian, Syrian and Armenian. The pic of the priest cutting the cake belongs to the Syrian Orthodox Church in India which is under the Patriarchate of Anthioch and All East and their local primate in India is Catholicos of India and metropolitan Trustee. Whereas the Indian Orthodox Church is under Catholicate of the East and Her Primate is Catholicos of the East and Malankara Metropolitan. The Syrian Orthodox And Indian Orthodox share the relation very similar to that exist between the Coptic and Ethiopian Orthodox Churches.
