I'm a llama!

Dear all

Christos Anesti (Christ is Risen)

I am informed by a friend of mine living in New South Wales (Australia) that a blasphemous play depicting our Lord and Saviour and God, Jesus Christ and his Apostles as homosexuals, has now been made into a movie and is set to appear in American cinemas later this year. The film is called Corpus Christi (Body of Christ) and is an example of how fallen this society is.

I was wondering if any of you have hear of this? Some links to articles on this topic in the past are below.

What can we do? PROTEST! Apparently, some regions in Europe have already banned the film.

Copy the names below and send the below message in an email to all in your address book.

I knew there was a play about this, but I had no idea it is going to be a movie...Lord have mercy!

You know some time back I read "The Trouble With Islam" by Irshad Manji. It is by a very liberal and lesbian Muslim, who is calling for reform in Islam. I think it is a well written book with a lot of controversial content, that really makes you think. Anyway, she mentions a play about Jesus and his Apostles, where they are all depicted as active homosexuals, by the name of Corpus Christi. I do not know if this movie is based on the play that she was refering to, but it is interesting to note that a certain group of Muslims in England decided to do something about it...... by offering money to whichever good Muslim  killed the play writter, however they did give him the option of converting to Islam. But don't worry if he would have converted, they still would have killed him, but the promise was, he would have gotten a Muslim burrial, and his wife would have been cared for by a good Muslim family.

A petition sounds more reasonable....don't you think?

This is an old, old urban legend.

There have evidently been some attempts in the past to make this into a movie for the mainstream to see. There is apparently a new attempt to start this again.

I should hope for a better cite than a forwarded email before I'll be concerned about this. A search for "Corpus Christi Jesus" on Google news brings up nothing about any plans for a movie.

No offense is intended Matteos, but Urban Legends sometimes have a life of their own and can pop years and long distances away from the last sighting.  Someone comes across an old story or a relative/friend remembers hearing about something happening to someone who knew a friend but can't recall details like dates and names.

In the US one about Madeline Murray O'Hair wanting to get religious broadcasting off the air has been circulating for years.  Never mind that O'Hare is dead and that she never filed any such petition.  It surfaced again in 2003 with the name of Dr. James Dobson attached to it saying that he was asking for people to protest it.  According to Barbara Mikkelson at www.snopes.com (the gold standard of Urban Legend information imho) who actually researches this sort of thing, he had nothing to do with it and has stated on his organizations website that he didn't.

While such a play was written and the story about it can be found on snopes, the 2 links given refer only to that play and are dated from 1998.  There is no corroborating data about any movie.

It seems that the movie might be just a story or an Urban Ledgend, but I know there was a play about this...which is just as disturbing, however, if Mel Gibson has the right to make a movie about his version of Christ, why can't someone else, who might be depicting a Christ that we don't like, have the right to do so?

Don't get me wrong, in no way am I saying such movies or plays are ok with me or don't bug me, but shouldn't everyone have the right to express their religious, cultural, and/or political principles and beliefs?

Some think Gibson's Jesus is just as absurd and dangerous as we may think a Gay Jesus is.

Ebor,
You are surely correct that Mattheos is not to be faulted. What is dismaying is that a story such as this is BELIEVABLE in today's culture. That we can consider that someone could conceive and produce a film like this at all tells us more about our modern world than maybe even the making the film itself would have done.

Demetri,

That may be true, or it may show the human tendency to, when hearing something bad or alarming or odd, believe it without asking questions or getting verifyable information.  Or both.

I wonder if this definition of "odd" would apply to "good" events as well, miracles, for example?

It could, I think.  I'm thinking of cases where people desparately want a miracle and are convinced that they have happened, for example with some of the wilder crusade-evangelist types.  One of them who was reputed to be given "words of knowledge" about people in the congregation was found to have a radio transmitter with people reading information cards to him.  But the people who came wanted and believed that such a miracle would happen.

I can across an interesting quote from Julius Ceasar just today thank sometimes can apply:

Libenter homines id quod volunt credunt
Men gladly believe that which they wish for

If what they wish for is that people they disagree with are reported to be evil, degenerate, appalling enough to justify their beliefs, and so for, they will believe it.

Just to be clear, I *do* believe in miracles from God, but I don't think that they will show up on cue.  God does what He wills to do, when He wants to. C.S. Lewis wrote about his wife being on her deathbed from bone cancer when an Anglican priest annointed her and prayed.  She (Joy Davidman) recovered enough to walk again, travel with him and lived for a few more years.
