May Martha's memory be always eternal!

May God grant her peace.

She was a kind, gentle soul.

We miss you, Martha!

We knew that her health had taken a recent downturn, and many of us were keeping her in our thoughts, prayers, and hearts.

+Memory Eternal!

I have known Martha for about 3.5 years, only by correspondence. We never met in real life, but, after having met virtually on an Orthodox forum, we kept exchanging news and messages regularly.

She was a beautiful soul. (Or should I perhaps say "is," because the soul does not die...) May the Lord receive her into His loving embrace and may He rest Martha with His saints.

Exalted and hallowed be His great Name, Amen. Throughout the world which He has created according to His Will. May He establish His kingship, bring forth His redemption and hasten the coming of His Moshiach. Amen.

In your lifetime and in your days and in the lifetime of the entire House of Israel, speedily and soon, and say, Amen.

Amen. May His great Name be blessed forever and to all eternity, blessed.

May His great Name be blessed forever and to all eternity. Blessed and praised, glorified, exalted and extolled, honored, adored and lauded be the Name of the Holy One, blessed be He.Amen.

Beyond all the blessings, hymns, praises and consolations that are uttered in the world; and say, Amen.

May there be abundant peace from heaven, and a good life for us and for all Israel; and say, Amen.

He Who makes peace in His heavens, may He make peace for us and for all Israel; and say, Amen.

The blameless in the way. Alleluia.  Blessed are You, O Lord, teach me Your statutes. Alleluia.

My soul is worn with endless longing for Your judgments at all times. Alleluia.

My soul has slumbered from sorrow; strengthen me with Your words. Alleluia.

Incline my heart unto Your testimonies, and not unto covetousness. Alleluia.

Despair took hold on me because of sinners that forsake Your Law. Alleluia.

I am a partaker with all that fear You, and with them that keep Your commandments. Alleluia.

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, both now and ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen. Alleluia.

For You are the Resurrection, the Life, and the Repose of Your servant Martha, O Christ our God; and to You do we send up glory, with Your Eternal Father, and Your All;Holy, Good and Life-creating Spirit, both now and ever, and to the ages of ages.

Your hands have made and fashioned me; give me understanding, and I will learn Your commandments. Have mercy on me, O Lord.

For I am become as a bottle in the frost; yet Your statutes have not forgotten. Have mercy on me, O Lord.

I am Yours, O save me; for after Your statutes have I sought. Have mercy on me, O Lord.

From Your judgments I have not declined, for You have set a Law for me. Have mercy on me, O Lord.

I have inclined my heart to perform Your statutes, forever, in return for Your mercies. Have mercy on me, O Lord.

It is time to serve the Lord; but they have violated Your law. Have mercy on me, O Lord.

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, both now and ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen.

Have mercy on me, Lord, O Lord.

For You are the Resurrection, the Life, and the repose of Your servant Martha, O Christ our God; and to You do we send up glory, with Your Eternal Father, and Your All;Holy, Good and Life;creating Spirit, both now and ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen.

And have mercy upon me. Alleluia. Look upon me, and have mercy on me. According to the judgment of them that love Your Name. Alleluia.

I am young and accounted as nothing. Your statutes have I not forgotten. Alleluia.

Hear my voice, O Lord, according to Your mercy; According to Your judgments quicken me. Alleluia.

Princes have persecuted me without a cause, and because of Your words my heart has been afraid. Alleluia.

My soul shall live, and shall praise You, And Your judgments will help me. Alleluia.

I have gone astray like a sheep that is lost. Seek Your servant, for I have not forgotten Your commandments.  Alleluia

Saints of God, come to her aid.
Come to meet her, angels of the Lord.
Receive her soul and present her to God the Most High.

May the Lord grant her eternal rest and let perpetual light shine upon her.
May she rest in peace.
O Lord, hear our prayer and let my cry come unto thee.

Domine miserere- O Lord, have mercy.

This is very sad news. It really is and I'll admit it made me weep.

With the spirits of the righteous give rest, O Savior, to the souls of Thy departed servants and keep them in the blessed life with Thee, O Lover of man. In the place of Thy rest, O Lord, where all Thy Saints repose give rest also to the souls of Thy servants for Thou alone art the Lover of men.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit: Thou art the God Who descended to hell and loosed the chains of the captives. Give rest, O Lord, to the souls of Thy servants.

Now and ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen: O only pure and immaculate Virgin, who without seed didst bear God, pray to Him that their souls may be saved.

Graciously, O Lord, repose her soul in the bosom of our holy fathers Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, sustain her in a geen pasture, by the water of rest in the paradise of joy, the place out of which grief, sorrow and groaning have fled away in the light of your saints.

Oh Lord, repose her soul in the paradise of joy, in the region of the living forever, in the heavenly Jerusalem, in that place, and we too, who are sojourners in this place, keep us in your faith, and grant us your peace unto the end.

Her last post included this part which is a nice reminder to many of us:

Are people being taught carefully the biblical truths of love, modesty, that killing is wrong and that we should instead love those who hate us?

O God of spirits and of all flesh, Who hast trampled down death, and overthrown the devil, and given life to Thy world: Do Thou, Thyself, our Lord give rest to the soul of Thy departed servant Martha, in a place of light, a place of green p...asture, a place of repose, whence all sickness, sorrow and sighing are fled away.... Pardon every sin committed by her in word, deed or thought, in that Thou art a good God, the Lover of mankind; For there is no man that liveth and sinneth not, for Thou alone art without sin, Thy righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, and Thy Word in Truth. Amen.

May Lord grant the eternal rest to His really loyal and faithful servant Martha! Lord, have mercy!

Indeed, shocking and terrible news...

It has been an honor and a privilege to have an ability to communicate with Martha. She always impressed me with her kindness, integrity, sincere faith and high erudition. Martha will be truly missed. She will be fondly remembered by everyone, who knew her.

Rest in peace, friend. Memory eternal!

I was really sad to read this thread. I actually had no idea what was going on with her health lately, only that she still had cancer. I actually just finished doing my evening prayers, and every time I get to prayers for the sick and suffering, I always prayed for Martha even though I didn't know her in "real" life. Just tonight, I was asking God to simply be with her, as we never know His will with sickness and suffering.

Anyway, this is a real shock and I for one will really miss her posts here. May she enter into his infinite holiness, and may we all remember how short our time is.

I am so sorry to learn this! I had no idea that Rosehip was so close to passing from this earthly life. I always appreciated her honesty and openness on this forum. She expressed her sorrows, her frustrations, and her needs without pretension or false piety. I had great respect for that. She set an example of genuine Christian transparency from which we all can learn. Are we sick? Then let us confess our illness and ask one another for prayer. Are we heartbroken? Then let us confess our broken hearts to each other and ask for healing and beg for unconditional love. Are we frustrated with actions and attitudes that we don't understand or that offend us? Then let us confess these things and ask our brothers and sisters to help us make sense of it. I only knew Rosehip from this forum, but through her words and her posts I felt the genuiness of her soul and the authenticity of her heart. As I remember her, the words of Our Lord come to mind:

"Come unto Me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest."
[St. Matthew 11:28]

I have confidence that Martha (Rosehip) is now resting in the perfect love of Christ Our Lord.

May her Memory be Eternal!

A truly gorgeous lady, taken from this world all too soon, but taken to a far better place, where there is no sorrow or pain. I'm sure she'll find the peace, rest and love she so longed for during her earthly life. She did indeed fight the good fight.

She had been battling cancer for several months, it seems.

Martha (Rosehip) started to feel ill in summer 2008, and was officially diagnosed with cancer in November, 2008. She underwent several major surgical operations and several rounds of chemotherapy, but the cancer kept coming back.

Lord, have mercy...May her memory be eternal.

I only knew her indirectly from her forum posts but nevertheless sensed a very gentle and compassionate spirit about her.

I greatly sympathised with her openly expressed ardent longing for a loving husband and as sorry as I feel about her departure cannot help but smile at the thought that she is now with the Divine Bridegroom Who embraces her with infinitely more love than she could ever have imagined possible from any bridegroom of this world. Again, as tragic as this situation is, I cannot help but praise God for His Wisdom. I must admit that in my few prayers for Martha while she was still with us on this earth, I often wondered why God would not grant her this one desire that meant so much to her. She seemed a genuinely righteous soul with good intentions, and I knew at the same time that she was suffering from a serious illness; to me it only made sense that God might relieve and delight her hurting soul by fulfilling this one heart's desire of hers. God, Who accords everything its own time and season according to His own purpose, did not deem it appropriate to permit a situation in which she would leave this temporal world with a grieving young family behind, and I'm sure that Martha, given her compassion, would not have wanted that either.

I do not intend in any way to detract from the tragedy of her loss, but even from the very little I knew of her from her forum posts alone, her life and departure seem to whisper some simple morals that we all grapple with in our own life struggles: "Trust in God; lean not on your own understanding; be anxious for nothing; seek His Kingdom alone."

I have had a rather extensive correspondence with Martha because I am from Kyiv, Ukraine - the city where she lived as a missionary and where she learned about Orthodoxy. She was so in love with my city of birth. Actually, the apartment where she lived in the mid-1990s was very close to, essentially in the same neighborhood as, the apartment where Lesya and I lived with our then-little daughter in 1985-1990. Martha remembered literally every street corner, every building, almost every tree. She truly had an exceptional memory and she was always so expressive when she wrote about something beautiful. But she also was amazingly shy. When her health began to deteriorate, I wrote her that I would be happy to talk with her on the phone, but she refused. She wrote me that she is terribly awkward and panicky when she talks on the phone. So, I never heard her voice. Rest in peace, dear sister.

She has been in prayers every versperal service this week during the prayers for the departed.

Please dear clergy of this forum and any prosphora makers who post, could you all please remember Martha during the Divine Liturgy by either praying for her during your preparation for the Holy Communion if you are a priest or writing her name on your commemoration list if you make the bread?

She didn't have an Orthodox family. And she spent many hours on this forum getting to know many of us.

thank you, Tamara

I remember not too long ago she had said that she was undergoing treatment. Whether it was radiation or chemotherapy, I can't recall. I just assumed that she was recovering and doing well. Apparently, that was not the case. Cry

O Lord, have mercy.

I've been away from the forum and had not heard of the passing of this gentle soul. Lord, have mercy upon Martha and grant her rest in your eternal Kingdom. Memory eternal.

I have never met her, but I've seen some of her posts and she seemed like a very kind woman.

O Almighty God, have mercy on your handmaiden Martha who has passed from this life. May her memory be eternal.

Lord, have mercy! From her FB, it seems that she was only 41. I am a mere 11 years away from that age. And what have I to show for my time in this world heretofore...let us all redouble our own efforts at repentance.

+Eternal memory! Our Rosehip was Martha Hays, who posted on Facebook as Martha L-macnair and on OC.net as Rosehip. She converted to Orthodoxy when she was a Mennonite missionary to Ukraine, and attended the Jordanville Summer Music School to learn more about the services of the Church. She died after a long battle with cancer, in Toronto, Monday morning at about 2 a.m., 20 December 2010. May God give her rest where there is no sickness or sorrow.

May her memory be eternal.
