Prayer/advice solicited re: family
« on: December 11, 2010, 11:24:09 PM »
I would like to ask for all y'all's prayers regarding a very troubling family matter.  My brother disclosed to me that my nephew, who's still in HS and supposed to graduate this year, has tested positive for some serious drug usage- marijuana, cocaine and meth.  In addition to this, he has threatened to drop out of school and move in with his half-sister.  He's also told my brother that he no longer believes in God and that "It's all manufactured BS to control the populace."  Honestly, I sometimes feel that him moving out might be a better alternative to him living with my brother and sister-in-law.  Those two, though they mean well I believe, are constantly fighting with and emotionally manipulating each other.  In the 15 years of their marriage, I cannot recall a time where their home was absent of drama.  I'm fairly certain that this background has most certainly facilitated my nephew's drug usage.  Imagine wanting to escape an environment, yet lacking the resources to do so!?!

My mother really wants me to call my nephew and talk to him.  I want to do this, but at the same time I'm worried that I'll just tick him off or that I won't be able to reach him.  Plus, I don't even know that my brother would consent.  I keep thinking back to when I used to hold him as a fat little baby with this ear-to-ear grin and I just break down.

During your own prayers, if y'all remember, could you please pray for my brother and his family.  And if I am granted permission to call my nephew, please also pray that I'll know what to say.

PS- In the past, it seems that posters were steered away from giving advice to the petitioners.  I tend to think that was just out of respect for those asking for prayers.  Well, with the moderators' permission, feel free to add your thoughts.

Thanks a million!  :)

Lord, have mercy!

I wish I had some advice to give, but, I don't.

All I can do is pray.

Conquer evil men by your gentle kindness, and make zealous men wonder at your goodness. Put the lover of legality to shame by your compassion. With the afflicted be afflicted in mind. Love all men, but keep distant from all men.

He started using drugs for a reason. I would try and talk to him about it if you can. "Bad" kids do bad things for a reason. As a past teen drug user myself; I think that talking to him would be an excellent idea. Just bear in mind that teens want to be treated with respect. He won't recieve anything he thinks is patronizing well. A listening ear is more helpful than advice. Make it clear that you are available as a listening ear anytime even if he doesn't want to talk to now. I will pray for the situation.

Update- The situation has now become very serious as my brother has informed me that although my nephew has returned home (he's run away several times), he is addicted to oxycontin and meth, and he uses marijuana as well.  I'm simply heartbroken about this situation because although I'm doing everything I can to help, it seems that nothing is helping.  I want to do something, anything, but my family just aren't qualified to handle this type of thing.  My brother and sister-in-law are at their wits end and heartbroken as well.  They are talking about forcing my nephew into some type of drug rehab but are scared to death of sending their son away with strangers.  I humbly ask that you pray for my family; give them the strength and courage to face this horrible addiction and take the appropriate course of action.  Please pray for my nephew- he's a good and sweet boy who's simply gotten into something that's taken over his life.  Pray that he'll have the courage to face his addiction and get the help he needs.  Please pray that our Good and Gracious Lord, Jesus Christ, will show his love and mercy upon this tragic situation.  Thank you all.

Update-  I am sooo happy to report that my nephew has voluntarily entered a Christian based rehab that specializes in addictions.  He's been there for about a month now and is doing well.  I'm told that his first week was hell with withdrawal symptoms, but that he's regaining mental clarity and has rededicated his life to Christ!!  Thanks again for your prayers!!  Glory to Jesus Christ!!!
