Bob Feller

I usually don't ask for prayers (here) for (a) strangers, (b) celebrities, and (c) non-Orthodox, but I'll break my habit this once:

Bob Feller is in hospice care.  A model citizen, terrific pitcher, true gentleman, he was at the cream of the crop at a time when there were many honest good players in Baseball.  He's the 3rd oldest living hall-of-famer, and the pride of Cleveland.  He left his pitching career in his prime to serve 3 1/2 years in WWII, and has constantly given back to his community (he's been criticized for giving out too many autographs - rendering them rather worthless for collectors, but priceless for the many kids who looked up to him).

Lord, have mercy.
"If you are going to serve the Lord, be prepared for times when you will be put to the test. Be sincere and determined. Keep calm when trouble comes. Stay with the Lord; never abandon Him and you will be prosperous at the end of your days. Accept whatever happens to you. Even if you suffer humiliation, be patient. Gold is tested by fire and human character is tested in the furnace of humiliation. Trust the Lord and He will help you. Walk straight in His ways and put your hope in Him. " Sir 2:1-6

Lord , have mercy. A real gentleman. Every year in the run up to Baseball Hall of Fame week in nearby Cooperstown, NY, Bob Feller and his wife would drive from Ohio to Cooperstown and stop at minor league ballparks along the way. We will always remember the thrill he gave my son and his little league teammates one July night when he was signing photographs for free for the fans at our local stadium. Even though his playing days were fifty or more years behind them, the children couldn't believe that a real Hall of Famer and hero of their grandparent's time was there and talking baseball to them.

Lord, have mercy.
"For, by its immensity, the divine substance surpasses every form that our intellect reaches. Thus we are unable to apprehend it by knowing what it is. Yet we are able to have some knowledge of it by knowing what it is not." - St. Thomas Aquinas, Summa contra gentiles, I, 14.

The latest news is that Bob Feller has died.  http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=5924684&campaign=rss&source=ESPNHeadlines

May the memory of the servant of God, Robert, be eternal!

(Interesting that he is the only pitcher ever to throw a no-hitter on opening day.)
