Regarding the phases: catharsis -> illumination -> theosis

Can somebody describe the process?  I assume the process is gradual with gradual rewards.  Or do you struggle for 20 years and then get a big reward?

Also does catharsis work better if you make extreme ascetic efforts during Lent and then slack-off afterwards?
