Question about akathists and other prayers

I have a book of akathists, and I noticed they are indicated to be in the different tones. Are the tones to be used when praying at home, or just when in a group setting in a service at church? 

Also, when I was in the Roman Catholic Church, we used to pray the rosary, as well as litanies to Christ and the saints. Since I've been going to an Orthodox church, I am trying to improve my prayer life, with the morning and evening prayers (so far I am using the Jordanville book). I want to start praying the Jesus Prayer more regularly; are there other Orthodox prayer habits as well, which would supplant the novenas and litanies that I used to say? Thanks in advance for any help.
