The Catholic church in Rome is trying to win back young people with a nightclub in the crypt of the Basilica di San Carlo al Corso, complete with a beer and wine bar. No cover charge. No hard liquor, though. |

It's from the Wall Street Journal. That's equivalent to the Bible in some parts: ""There should be more places like this," said Annalisa Gennaro, a 21-year-old theology student, as she and a friend made their way into the club. "It's about time the church woke up." Father Mirilli sees the club as a bridge to carry young Italians back into the Catholic fold. Like most dioceses across Europe, the Vicariate of Rome—as the city's local church is formally known—is looking for new blood. As it is, the pews at Basilica di San Carlo al Corso and other Roman churches have increasingly become the domain of the elderly as fewer young people turn up for Mass." |

This seems a bit extreme, but it really is not a new idea. I know that this is going to shock some of you out there, but for many of us who were born into ethnic Orthodox communities, we grew up with a social club that often was on, or adjacent to church property. I'm not endorsing the idea, but just stating the facts as they were.

The entirety of the church property is not the same-- anyone think of the church secretary's office as sacred? My former Catholic parish used to have its events center in the basement, because that's the only place where they had room to put it. We went there for dinners and dances all the time. Why? Because the auditorium was down there. I went to a college which had an abbey on the campus. Not half a mile from the abbey, was a bookstore with a coffee shop outside of it. Sometimes they'd allow alcohol sales at events in the little shop. It's not as if we were drinking in the chapel.  |

 That is not the type of place you go to party. It is more of a hangout. It sounds better than most other places of that type which I know, where your thoughts are drowned out by either pop music or weird indie r'n'b. If you want to party, that means well you want to get wasted, entranced in electronical music and forget the when, where, how and what you are doing.

Bingo! While I never had such a thing, my father's German Catholic parish had something very similar when he was growing up. On Friday nights in the late '40s/early '50s, he and his brothers and sisters would go to the church hall (located in between the church and the rectory) for dances and such and, from what I understand, there was beer and wine for those old enough to imbibe. However, the moment anyone got out of line or exhibited any drunken behavior, he was tossed out. No ifs, ands or buts. |

I wonder though if people realize what kind of dancing and such goes on at nightclubs... If it WERE just hanging out and maybe drinking a little, it wouldn't be a problem. But once you've been to a few nightclubs and college/frat parties, you might change your mind about how "okay" this might be...
