Chinese Supercomputer Wrests Title From U.S.

A Chinese scientific research center has built the fastest supercomputer ever made, replacing the United States as maker of the swiftest machine, and giving China bragging rights as a technology superpower.

The computer, known as Tianhe-1A, has 1.4 times the horsepower of the current top computer, which is at a national laboratory in Tennessee, as measured by the standard test used to gauge how well the systems handle mathematical calculations, said Jack Dongarra, a University of Tennessee computer scientist who maintains the official supercomputer rankings...

1.4X?? Wow, that's quite the record-shattering feat.

Yup. Unfortunately, we are going to start getting our butts kicked by China alot more often. We are too lazy in this country.

1.4x is hardly impressive.  It is on the lower side of the average increase we see every year.  Don't worry, in 1 to 1.5 years (if everything remains on track), the US will be back on top.  California will be the home of a new ~20 petaFLOPS IBM supercomputer (8x faster than the current Tianhe-I).
As a result of a thousand million years of evolution, the universe is becoming conscious of itself, able to understand something of its past history and its possible future.
