Here's a Question
« on: March 19, 2004, 12:07:56 PM »
Here's something that has been at the back of my mind for awhile.

Why do some Orthodox hierarchs allow themselves to be addressed as "His All Holiness" and "His Eminence" and with similar titles?

Pardon me, but such things seem to be the very antithesis of humility.

Just wondering.

Please explain.

I think the reason the churches that claim the apostolic ministry have those titles for bishops is because the titles refer to the office, not the men who hold it. So personal humility or lack thereof's got nothing to do with it.

It is a good question, Linus7. But whose humility should be questioned? Theirs, ours, or both? ;)

Good answer, Serge. (Now why didn't I know that...?)

I think Serge's answer was good.

I wasn't attacking anything myself, but I have had Protestants ask me that very question, and I never had a good answer for them.

I must also admit that the idea of calling a mere sinful mortal "Your All Holiness" bugs me a little bit. That probably has as much to do with my background as an American as it does with the loftiness of the title itself.

Armed with Serge's explanation, such titles won't trouble me (too much).
