Hello, I was wondering if someone could help me with the words that are in this icon. Our church has an icon of the Pantocrator. (There is one in the church dome, and there is also one in the side chapel.) Around the edge of the image of Christ, in between Him and the angels, there is a circle. In the circle is a long string of words. I can read a few of the words, but I can't quite make out all of them. My knowledge of Greek is modest at best. If it's possible, can anyone take a look at the icon and see if they can translate the entire sentence? Any help is very much appreciated.

Here is a link to some photos of the church.

This is the specific one:

Thank you.

"
"The heaven is my throne and the earth my footstool of my feet..."
I'll translate the rest as soon as I'll have time.

I wonder if iconographic tradition permits selection from more than one available passage for inclusion in the circle.  The Pantocrator icon in the dome of my parish has this in its circle:

"I am the Alpha and Omega, the First and Last, Who was and Who is and Who is to come, the Almighty."  ( a direct quote of Revelation 1:8 )

At St. Sophia's in LA:  "I am the Light of the world, he who follows Me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."

It's Isaiah 66:1.

Frequently, the Pantokrator has around it, "Lord, Lord, look down from heaven and behold and visit this vineyard, and establish that which Your right hand has planted," (the Episcopal exclamation during the Bema portion of the Trisagion done at Hierarchical Liturgies).

I'm not 100% on this, but I think I've seen 1 parish with a double-ring of quotes around the Pantokrator.  I can't recall (at the moment) for the life of me where it was.

If it doesn't allow it, its broken. I've seen quite a variety of Biblical verses in the circule. Off hand I recall "Holy! Holy! Holy! Lord of Sabatoh! Heaven and Earth are full of your glory!" "I am the Way, the Truth and the Life. No one comes to the Father but by Me." "I am the Light of the World He who follows
Me will not walk in darkness, but will have the Light of life."

Question a friend, perhaps he did not do it; but if he did anything so that he may do it no more.
A hasty quarrel kindles fire,
and urgent strife sheds blood.
If you blow on a spark, it will glow;
if you spit on it, it will be put out;

All beautiful selections from the scriptures.

At St. Michaels Antiochian in Greensburg PA it's... "The Lord looks from heaven, he sees all the sons of men from the place of his dwelling. He looks upon all those who live on earth. He considers all their works, he fashions their hearts alike." - Ps. 33:13-15

I remember being in Holy Virgin Cathedral in San Fran earlier this year.... I don't recall if the Pantacorator had a Scripture around Him.  Anyone know?

If anyone is in San Francisco, and you have a few hours, GO TO HOLY VIRGIN CATHEDRAL!  The most amazing Church of the entire West Coast.  Huge, beautiful, and blessed with the relics of St John.

Around our Pantocrator it says "Lord Jesus Christ Son of God Have Mercy Upon Me" in English, Greek, and Arabic.
