God is love; be faithful un to death.

« on: September 09, 2010, 12:26:28 PM »

I am creating this thread so that folks can post verses of the Bible that they like, and would like to share to others. Or questions about any verses/chapters of the bible so that those who are knowledgeable about our church can provide thorough explanation about it. I think it could provide us more opportunity to learn about Christianity.

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Mat 6:31-33  Therefore do not be anxious, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?'  (32)  For the Gentiles seek all these things; and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all.  (33)  But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things shall be yours as well.

Rom 8:28  We know that in everything God works for good with those who love him, who are called according to his purpose.

In bringing many sons to glory, it was fitting that God, for whom and through whom everything exists, should make the author of their salvation perfect through suffering. Both the one who makes men holy and those who are made holy are of the same family. So Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers. He says,
   "I will declare your name to my brothers;
      in the presence of the congregation I will sing your praises."And again,
   "I will put my trust in him." And again he says,
   "Here am I, and the children God has given me."

And you, my child, will be called a prophet of the Most High;
      for you will go on before the Lord to prepare the way for him,
to give his people the knowledge of salvation
      through the forgiveness of their sins,
because of the tender mercy of our God,
      by which the rising sun will come to us from heaven
to shine on those living in darkness

to guide our feet into the path of peace."

My son, keep your father's commands
       and do not forsake your mother's teaching.
 Bind them upon your heart forever;
       fasten them around your neck.

 When you walk, they will guide you;
       when you sleep, they will watch over you;
       when you awake, they will speak to you.

 For these commands are a lamp,
       this teaching is a light,
       and the corrections of discipline
       are the way to life,

 keeping you from the immoral woman,
       from the smooth tongue of the wayward wife.

So, because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jews persecuted him. Jesus said to them, “My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I, too, am working.” For this reason the Jews tried all the harder to kill him; not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.

While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, “What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is he?”
   “The son of David,” they replied.

He said to them, “How is it then that David, speaking by the Spirit, calls him ‘Lord’? For he says,
“‘The Lord said to my Lord:
   “Sit at my right hand
until I put your enemies
   under your feet.”’
If then David calls him ‘Lord,’ how can he be his son?” No one could say a word in reply, and from that day on no one dared to ask him any more questions.

I will sing for the one I love
   a song about his vineyard:
My loved one had a vineyard
   on a fertile hillside.
He dug it up and cleared it of stones
   and planted it with the choicest vines.
He built a watchtower in it
   and cut out a winepress as well.
Then he looked for a crop of good grapes,
   but it yielded only bad fruit.
(Isa. 5:1-2)

  Song of Solomon 2
Quote
  "I am like a rose on the coast of Sharon.
      I'm like a lily in the valleys."
   The king says,
 2 "My love, among the young women
      you are like a lily among thorns."

   The woman says,
 3 "My love, among the young men
      you are like an apple tree among the trees of the forest.
   I'm happy to sit in your shade.
      Your fruit tastes so sweet to me.
 4 You have taken me to the dinner hall.
      Your banner of love is lifted high above me.
 5 Give me some raisins to make me strong.
      Give me some apples to make me feel like new again.
      Our love has made me weak.
 6 Your left arm is under my head.
      Your right arm is around me.
 7 Women of Jerusalem, take an oath and make me a promise.
      Let the antelopes and the does serve as witnesses.
   Don't stir up love.
      Don't wake it up until it's ready.

Rom. 7
Quote
7 What should we say then? That the law is sin? Not at all! I wouldn't have known what sin was unless the law had told me. The law said, "Do not want what belongs to other people." If the law hadn't said that, I would not have known what it was like to want what belonged to others. 8 But the commandment gave sin an opportunity. Sin caused me to want all kinds of things that belonged to others.

21 Here is the law I find working in me. When I want to do good, evil is right there with me. 22 Deep inside me I find joy in God's law. 23 But I see another law working in the parts of my body. It fights against the law of my mind. It makes me a prisoner of the law of sin. That law controls the parts of my body.

5)My soul,wait sillently for God alone,For my expectation is from Him.

6)He only is my rock and salvation;He is my defence;I shall not be moved.

7)In God is my salvation and my glory;The rock of my sterngth,And my refuge ,is in God.

8)Trust in Him at all times,you people;Pour out your heart before Him;God is a refuge for us

For all the law is fullfilled in one word, even in this: "you shall love your neighbor as yourself." But if you bite and devour one another, beware lest you be consumed by one another.

Psalm 38 (37)

 Do not fret because of evildoers,
         Nor be envious of the workers of iniquity.
 2 For they shall soon be cut down like the grass,
         And wither as the green herb.

 3 Trust in the LORD, and do good;
         Dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness.
 4 Delight yourself also in the LORD,
         And He shall give you the desires of your heart.

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.

 “Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise—  “so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.”

 Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.

Let all who seek You rejoice and be glad in You; And let those who love Your salvation say continually, "Let God be magnified." Psalm 70:4

To God be the Glory in all things! Amen!

Only pray for me, that God would give me both inward and outward strength, that I may not only speak, but truly will; and that I may not merely be called a Christian, but really be found to be one. St.Ignatius of Antioch.Epistle to the Romans.

Sirach 38
Good News Translation (GNT)
Sickness and Medicine

38 Give doctors the honor they deserve, for the Lord gave them their work to do.[a] 2 Their skill came from the Most High, and kings reward them for it. 3 Their knowledge gives them a position of importance, and powerful people hold them in high regard.

4 The Lord created medicines from the earth, and a sensible person will not hesitate to use them. 5 Didn't a tree once make bitter water fit to drink, so that the Lord's power might be known? 6 He gave medical knowledge to human beings, so that we would praise him for the miracles he performs. 7-8 The druggist mixes these medicines, and the doctor will use them to cure diseases and ease pain. There is no end to the activities of the Lord, who gives health to the people of the world.

9 My child, when you get sick, don't ignore it. Pray to the Lord, and he will make you well. 10 Confess all your sins and determine that in the future you will live a righteous life. 11 Offer incense and a grain offering, as fine as you can afford.[c] 12 Then call the doctor—for the Lord created him—and keep him at your side; you need him. 13 There are times when you have to depend on his skill. 14 The doctor's prayer is that the Lord will make him able to ease his patients' pain and make them well again. 15 As for the person who sins against his Creator, he deserves to be sick.

Sirach 3
New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)
Duties toward Parents

3 Listen to me your father, O children;
    act accordingly, that you may be kept in safety.
2 For the Lord honors a father above his children,
    and he confirms a mother’s right over her children.
3 Those who honor their father atone for sins,
4     and those who respect their mother are like those who lay up treasure.
5 Those who honor their father will have joy in their own children,
    and when they pray they will be heard.
6 Those who respect their father will have long life,
    and those who honor[a] their mother obey the Lord;
7     they will serve their parents as their masters.
8 Honor your father by word and deed,
    that his blessing may come upon you.
9 For a father’s blessing strengthens the houses of the children,
    but a mother’s curse uproots their foundations.
10 Do not glorify yourself by dishonoring your father,
    for your father’s dishonor is no glory to you.
11 The glory of one’s father is one’s own glory,
    and it is a disgrace for children not to respect their mother.
12 My child, help your father in his old age,
    and do not grieve him as long as he lives;
13 even if his mind fails, be patient with him;
    because you have all your faculties do not despise him.
14 For kindness to a father will not be forgotten,
    and will be credited to you against your sins;
15 in the day of your distress it will be remembered in your favor;
    like frost in fair weather, your sins will melt away.
16 Whoever forsakes a father is like a blasphemer,
    and whoever angers a mother is cursed by the Lord.

^Two good passages from Sirach, but which translation is better?  I tried finding Sirach online in the New King James version, which I have heard is the best, but I can't find it.
