I'm not sure if this is the right board to post this in.

What is the proper way to use an Athonite cork float?

What? ???
Question a friend, perhaps he did not do it; but if he did anything so that he may do it no more.
A hasty quarrel kindles fire,
and urgent strife sheds blood.
If you blow on a spark, it will glow;
if you spit on it, it will be put out;
                           and both come out of your mouth

Pull cotton wicking through the center loop of wire with a quarter inch or so sticking through the top.

Place in a lampada full of olive oil with the quarter inch side up

Ok, so I don't have to do anything with the wires then?

if I'm being honest I was tempted to describe some complicated prayer-ropeish knot that you were supposed to use.

But no, they're just for picking the float up out of the oil as it burns and gets lower.

I pull the wires outward a little so the float stays in the center instead of floating from side to side.  I guess it depends on how big the actual lamp is.

Really, you wouldn't believe the different ways I thought it was supposed to be used when I first bought it.  If I remember correctly, I had to end up buying a second one because I destroyed the first one trying to figure out how it was supposed to be used.  ::)
