Hosanna Maryam was born at 12:03 p.m. today! 4 pounds, 5 ounces. She is a beautiful gift from God! I am deeply grateful for everyone's prayers and encouragement. Please continue to lift little Hosanna up to God. She has a few hurdles to overcome right now, but we know she is divinely blessed. I will keep you apprised of her progress. My wife is doing fine. She is my hero, and the bravest and most beautiful woman I know. I don't deserve these tremendous blessings. The mercy of God endureth forever. (BTW, we changed our baby's name slightly after learning that in Ethiopian Orthodox tradition it is not repsectful to name a baby's first name after Our Lady the Virgin St. Mary. Our Priest said "Hosanna Maryam" was a good name, and that we can call her "Hosanna" or "Hosanna Maryam." We will most likely just call her "Hosanna.") +++ PSALM 127:3-5 +++ Selam, Gebre Menfes Kidus

First, let me say how grateful our family is for all of the prayers, encouragement, and support from so many of you on this forum. We have felt your prayers, and we know that God is hearing and answering them.
We received Hosanna's test results on Friday. She has Trisomy 18, which is also known as Edwards Syndrome. The statistics are discouraging: newborns have a 40% chance of surviving to age 1 month; infants have a 5% chance of surviving to age 1 year; and there is a 1% chance of surviving to age ten. But there have been rare instances where people with Trisomy 18 have lived to be 27 years old.
It seems that Hosanna will have severe mental retardation, and we already know that she has a congenital heart defect. There are also many other potential problems that can accompany Trisomy 18.
That being said, we know that God is bigger than statistics. Little Hosanna Maryam is a beautiful little baby with the sweetest disposition. She has such a soft little cry, and is not fussy at all. She sleeps, stretches, yawns, and cries a little when she is hungry. My wife has been able to successfully breast feed her, but Hosanna usually drinks breast milk from a bottle because she burns too many calories if she breast feeds every time. Her weight has been fluctuating between about 4 pounds 2 ounces and 4 pounds.
We are going to love Hosanna and care for her the best we can, trusting God one day at a time. The hardest thing to deal with is all the uncertainty and the unknowns. But she is a blessing from God, and I can tell that she is surrounded by angels. I know that she is already God's servant, bringing glory to Him and reminding us of the beauty, fragility, and sanctity of human life.
Again, please know how much we appreciate all your prayers and kind words of wisdom and support. I will keep you updated on little Hosanna's progress and development.
Selam,
Gebre Menfes Kidus

HAPPY BIRTHDAY HOSANNA!!! You are now four weeks old! You are already defying the odds (doctors said it was unlikely that you wuld survive one month.) We are so proud of you! You are a blessing to us, bringing peace, joy, love, and light into our home and into our lives. I look at you and see everything that Our Lord would have me become: innocent, pure, completely dependent upon God, and completely open and receptive to love. We know you are in God's hands, and that you will fulfill His purpose for your life. So many people are praying for you! I love you Hosanna Maryam! Selam

May the Lord continue to grant her strength, support, and, above all, the abundant love that He gives you to share with her.

Brother in Christ, Gebre and Family:
Having eight children (one of whom has Down Syndrome), we know a little of what you are going through and feeling. But, thanks be to God, you have the Christian answer. Keep reminding yourself and your wife about these things and continue to pray to see God's powerful grace in this entire situation. If you do this you, your wife and Hosanna Mariyam will all be triuphant no matter what the earthly results. Please know that I and my family will join the others who are praying for you and your precious little girl.
