The doctor thinks baby Mariyam, our unborn child, probably has a chromosome abnormality. Due to a number of factors - lack of substantive growth, she won't unclench her fists, she may have a possible hole in her heart valve, heart arrhythmia (which is fine now), and a cyst (that has now gone away) - the doctor told us that there is an 80% chance that our baby has "Tresimy 21" (commonly known as Down's Syndrome) or "Tresimy 18." An amniocentesis will tell us for sure whether or not baby Mariyam has this chromosome abnormality. But there are some risks involved with an amniocentisis, and if there is a chromosome abnormality there is no treatment for it. I really don't think we'll have an amniocentesis.
We know baby Mariyam has been sent to us by God. We know that she will serve whatever purpose that God has for her. We are committed to doing everything within our power to protect and nurture her life for as long as possible. The rest is in God's hands. But personally, I truly believe that baby Mariyam will be born just as healthy as our other three children.
Your prayers are much appreciated.
Thank you.
Selam

Don't worry too much please. She sounds like she is actually pretty healthy for a baby that possibly has downs syndrome or trisomy 18. I have been in situations where we were urged to have an amnio before. I have always declined to have the amnio and just prayed that God would be with our child and us. An amnio is only really useful in regard to downs if you would choose to abort (which I know you would not). I normally consent to the integrated quad screen (this is a blood test in the late 1st trimester that is used in conjunction with an additional blood screening in the second trimester. The false positive rate of this set of tests is much lower then nuchal fold testing and a single quad screen).
That said, some of the sweetest children I have ever met have had downs syndrome. I truly believe that those children have a view of the world that is pure and are themselves some of the most pure hearted people to live. These children are no less a blessing then any other child.
God be with you and yours, and may you all be granted unexplainable peace.
There is a protestant Christian couple that dealt with having a child that had trisomy 18, he is in the Christian group Selah. The mother Angie wrote a book called "I will carry you" about the experience of carrying their daughter. It is fairly heartwrenching to read, but it is also quite uplifting as well.

My sister had a child with undeveloped lungs and practically no internal organs. All the testing didnt' pick up on that. Conversely, I've known embryos who "failed" tests but came out pefectly fine. Doctors do not know everything.

An amniocentesis might be useful to confirm any chromosomal anomalies; it would give you time to research and prepare to live with your baby's condition. But I understand if you feel the risk is too great.

In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, one God, Amen.
O holy Father, heavenly Physician of our souls and bodies, who hast sent thine Only-begotten Son our Lord Jesus Christ to heal all our ailments and deliver us from death: do thou visit and heal thy handmaiden Mariyam, granting her release from pain and restoration to health and vigor, that she may give thanks unto thee and bless thy holy Name, of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit: now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.
May Our Loving God's mercy and the intercession of the Blessed Virgin be with your sweet daughter.
I'll be praying hard for your precious girl.

Thank you SO MUCH everyone for all your prayers. We have really felt them! Well, it looks like they are going to deliver baby Mariyam early, probably a week from Tuesday (August 30th). She just hasn't gained enough weight, and the doctors say she will be able to receive nourishment better outside of the womb. If my wife carries her to term, there is a strong risk of still-birth. Baby Mariyam has a VSD (Ventricular Septum Defect), which is basically a hole in her heart valve if I understand correctly. The doctors say this might correct itself after she is born, but she might need surgery. They won't know until she is born. But her heartbeat is strong and steady, and her arrhythmia has completely cleared up. She also finally opened her hands one time, so that was encouraging. It's crazy how fast all this is happening! I can't thank you all enough for your prayers and words of encouragement. Please keep praying! I'll update you in about a week. Selam

She opened her hands? This sounds like encouraging news, brother! I have a small icon card of the Blessed Virgin that was touched to the myrrh-streaming Iveron icon, and I'm going to beg St. Mary's intercession for your little Mariyam tonight. Your family will be in my families prayers tonight. Keep your head up and keep us posted, brother.

The hand movement is extremely promising! A couple little pieces of advice from someone that has had a child in the NICU; you need to make sure that your needs (both as a mom and dad) are attended to. This is still your child and your desires still matter a great deal. IV's in the head are much easier to deal with then the ones in the feet/hand/belly button. You change diapers so often and move a child so much, the IV placement makes a big difference. Many nurses don't want to put an IV there because it looks scary, and it does look really scary. But it is much easier to have one good IV then to have multiple blown veins all over your poor baby. So if they give you an option of IV placement, go with the head. She will likely be inoculated for RSV. This is a REALLY good thing to do. I would add additionally that a UVC wand is great for killing a lot of the nastiness that comes home. It is really easy to just go over everything every night this way without causing a build up of chemicals or getting resistant types growing. You can't use it on skin, but it is great for phones, door knobs, changing tables, counters- pretty much all the things that you would have to douse with Lysol every night if you have an immunocompromised baby. It isn't practical to wash a car seat, bouncy seat, chairs, swing etc. daily, this allows you to keep them "clean" inbetween washing them. I had one that I used thru this last year and I can't recommend it highly enough. I am happy for you that you have a new blessing coming, and especially that you see her as the blessing she is rather then worrying about the troubles she could have. Take good care of yourself as well as your family. Men tend to try to be the hero in a situation sometimes. But that is merely delaying the reaction, making it worse. I will be praying for your family. Your wife may find some solace in the Akathist to the Mother of God Nurturer of Children http://www.serfes.org/orthodox/nuturerofchildren.htmWhile I was pregnant I found these prayers on here; First Prayer during Pregnancy Master, Lord Jesus Christ our God, Source of life and immortality, we thank Thee, that Thou hast enabled us in wedlock to become partakers of Thy blessing and gift, for Thou hast said, O Master, "Grow and multiply and you will fill the earth." We thank Thee and pray: bless this fruit of our body which Thou hast granted us, show Thy mercy upon it and enliven it with Thy Holy Spirit. Make its body to grow in health and without flaw and grant it well-formed members. Sanctify its body, mind, heart and inward parts. Grant this infant wisdom and fear of Thee; appoint a faithful guardian Angel for his soul and body. Cover, protect, strengthen and preserve the child in our womb until the very hour when Thou didst command him to be born. But do not conceal him in his mother's womb, for Thy hands have prepared him. Thou gavest him life and breath. O Lord Jesus Christ, we entrust our child into Thine all-powerful hands. Place the right hand of Thy grace upon him, sanctify him with Thy Holy Spirit and renew him for eternal life, that he may be a partaker of Thy Kingdom. Amen. Second Prayer during Pregnancy O all-merciful Christ our God, look upon us and preserve us, Thy servants, from fear and evil spirits, which hope to destroy the work of Thy hands. And when our hour and time will come, grant us deliverance according to Thy grace. Look upon us in Thy mercy and free Thy servants from torment. Alleviate the hardships of our pregnancy and grant us the strength and fortitude to give birth and enable this with Thine all-powerful help. For this is Thy wondrous creation, the power of Thy omnipotence, the work of Thy grace and mercy. Amen. Third Prayer during Pregnancy Our most merciful Queen, our hope, O Mother of God, the joy of those who sorrow — help us who are weak, and pray to Thy Son, Christ our God, that He may lighten the time of our pregnancy and successfully resolve this difficult time of His unworthy servants, and that His blessing may be on the infant born of us. For we have no other help, no other hope, but only you, O Mother of God, that you may preserve and cover us and our child. For through your protection and help we are saved, and send up glory and thanksgiving for all to the One God in Trinity and the Creator of all, always, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
