calculation of Pascha
« on: July 03, 2010, 09:12:13 PM »
Could someone please explain the substantial differences between the current Western and Eastern methods of calculating the date of Pascha?

Orthodox Pascha must ALWAYS be after the Jewish Passover.  Western Easter doesn't necessarily have to be.

Thirteen days, until 2100, after which it will become fourteen days.

Our Paschalion pretends the vernal equinox is happening on the same date it did in the fifth century. It has nothing to do with the Jewish Passover, although many, starting in the 11th century, assumed it did. See this thread for more info:

Yes, it does: that's why the Paschal moon and the spring equinox are involved.  Passover was the first full moon of spring.

So are you saying that we have to go begging to the Jews to find out when their Passover is so that we can celebrate Orthodox Pascha correctly? On what other issues are we required to consult the Jews?
