I've decided for ease of reference to link a basic chart of the Armenian alphabet, for those who are curious about our alphabet, but who don't want to take full fledged lessons: http://www.tacentral.com/language/alpha.aspIt gives the Eastern Armenian pronunciation. A few additional comments about things in the chart that may not be clear: The letters " ու" together make the "oo" sound, like in "moon." An example is մուկ, which means "mouse." It's pronounced "mook." As indicated in the chart, there are a couple of letters that are pronounced a little differently, depending on whether they appear at the beginning of a word, or in the middle. Ե is "ye" at the beginning of a word, but "e" in the middle. Ո is "vo" at the beginning of a word, but "o" in the middle. Also, իւ is equivalent to the French u (sort of like the eau in beautiful), while յու is equivalent to "you". They both represent the same thing however:
գիտութիւն vs. գիտություն
It's the same word.
The former is Mashots Orthodography (W. Armenian and E. Armenian spoken in Iran), while the latter is Rreformed Orthography (Armenian spoken in the former USSR).

Thank you! I forgot about իւ. Yeah, it's kind of like a French "u." I usually just transliterate it as "ioo" or "yoo." It's interesting how in Armenia they've made it "յու." I guess that's more of a phonetic spelling.

Every important person who visits Armenia goes to the Genocide Memorial, and Secretary Clinton was the latest one. We've posted in the past in other sections about dignitaries visiting that place. It's never been considered politics. The Genocide Memorial has great significance to the Armenians because it commemorates the 1.5 million who were killed by the Turks during the Genocide. Visiting the memorial is one of the ways of showing respect and it is partly how Armenians mourn for them. The Genocide was an ultimate act of religious persecution against an Orthodox people. Discussion of such things has always been outside what is considered politics. |

Ս. Սիմեոն Սյունակյացը ծնվել է 390 թ. Կիլիկիայում: Փոքր հասակում եղել է հովիվ: Երբ մի օր եկեղեցի է մտնում և չհասկանալով օրվա ընթերցված Ավետարանի իմաստը, դիմում է իր կողքին կանգնած ծերունուն: Ծերունին բացատրում է ընթերցվածի իմաստը` ասելով, որ այն ժուժկալ լինելու մասին է, որպեսզի մարդը ճգնության, զրկանքների, ծոմապահության և սակավապետության ճանապարհովով երկնքի արքայությանն արժանանա: Այս խոսքերի վրա խորհելով՝ Սիմեոնը Սիրիայի Հաթա նահանգն է անցնում, ուր 3 տարի մի վանքում առանձնանալուց հետո, Աստծուց քարոզելու և բժշկելու շնորհ է ստանում: Տեսնելով, որ այցելուներն ու հիվանդներն իրեն շատ են նեղում, սկզբում մի խոր փոս է փորում, որտեղից միայն գլուխն էր երևում՝ քարոզելու համար, ապա 60 կանգուն բարձրությամբ սյան վրա է բարձրանում: Գլխի վերև որևէ ծածկ չունենալով` կանգնած կամ ծնկած էր անցկացնում իր օրն` իբրև սնունդ միայն շաբաթը մեկ անգամ Ս. Հաղորդություն ստանալով: Նա սյան վրայից տարիներ շարունակ քարոզում էր և իր աղոթքներով բժշկում բազմաթիվ հիվանդների:
