Memory Eternal to John Wooden, one of my heroes. He was a faithful christian and one of our country's greatest leaders. He grew up just a few miles from where I live, and one of his brothers was a teacher of mine in High School. Memory Eternal Coach.
"Talent is God-given. Be humble. Fame is man-given. Be grateful. Conceit is self-given. Be careful." John Wooden

Just heard that yesterday morning, knowing he was going to die soon, he asked for someone to come shave him. When they asked why he said, "because soon I'll be with my wife." What a simple, yet profound, expression of faith.

Excellence of character, then, is a state concerned with choice, lying in a mean relative to us, this being determined by reason and in the way in which the man of practical wisdom would determine it. Now it is a mean between two vices, that which depends on excess and that which depends on defect.

More from John Wooden:
In mourning Nellie's death, Wooden was comforted by his faith.[23] He was a Christian for many years and his beliefs were more important to him than basketball, "I have always tried to make it clear that basketball is not the ultimate. It is of small importance in comparison to the total life we live. There is only one kind of life that truly wins, and that is the one that places faith in the hands of the Savior."[24] Wooden's faith strongly influenced his life. He read the Bible daily and attended the First Christian Church.[23] He said that he hopes his faith is apparent to others, "If I were ever prosecuted for my religion, I truly hope there would be enough evidence to convict me."
May his memory be eternal!
