A Beautiful Icon of the Holy St. Severus
« on: May 28, 2010, 10:09:38 PM »
This is the icon of the St Severus at the blessed Monastery of St Antony on the Red Sea after the recent restorations there. If memory serves correctly, he stands in the company of Sts. Athanasius, Cyril and Dioscorus. The colours are stunning! May the prayers of the Great Patriarchs be with us all.

How beautiful!

I think this is from the same monastery that was featured in a video I linked here:

I really like old-style Coptic iconography, especially the ones I've seen from St. Anthony's. Neo-Coptic iconography can also be very beautiful, but there is something particularly captivating about the old stuff. I wish it was more widespread.

Neo-Coptic iconography

A better label might be Disney-Byzantine  ;)
