Why do orthodox fast on wednsedays and fridays?
Is it only a partial fast of just meat and dairy?

Wednesday because of the betrayal and Friday because of the Cross. What else is there besides meat and dairy? |

My new Priest takes these fasts VERY seriously which is very hard on me because I take eating even more seriously than he takes fasting. I guess that is why God led me to him. I'm working under the assumption that it was for him to convert me and not the other way around  |

The fasts on wed and fri should be observed in the same manner as weekdays of Great Lent. |

The Wednesday/Friday fast is, I think, the oldest recorded fast observed by Christians. It's older than the Lenten fast. (If I have this wrong, please someone correct me.  ) It's mentioned in the Didache, a Christian document dating back to the first century: http://www.earlychristianwritings.com/text/didache-lake.html(See chapter 8 ) |
