Christos anesti! One very current and extremely encouraging example of how Orthodoxy is preparing to engage the religious dialogue in America is expressed in the theme of the forthcoming St. Vladimir’s Seminary Summer Symposium, "Hellenism and Orthodoxy (June 10-12.) Not only will Archbishop Dimitrios deliver the symposium keynote but the Very Rev. Dr. Archimandrite Elpidophoros Lambrianiadis, Chief Secretary of the Holy & Sacred Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate will discuss Hellenism and Orthodox Identity in North America. http://www.ocl.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=OrthodoxUnity.one&content_id=18571&CFID=69583204&CFTOKEN=22786880That should prove interesting. The last time he spoke here, it went over so well.... http://www.orthodoxchristianity.net/forum/index.php/topic,20260.0.html

Question a friend, perhaps he did not do it; but if he did anything so that he may do it no more. A hasty quarrel kindles fire, and urgent strife sheds blood. If you blow on a spark, it will glow; if you spit on it, it will be put out; and both come out of your mouth

Just callin' a spade a spade. Perhaps the archmandrite will take the opportunity to mend his speech, meriting a new title.

Trying to rile people up with your title, eh? Hmmm. Just callin' a spade a spade. Nope: he is the chief secretary of the Synod of Constantinople, so you've managed to call a spade a Buick.

We've hoed this row before. It's just that you're using the wrong hoe. Perhaps there would be a bit more good will if certain segments of the Church stopped referring to other parts as 'diaspora.'
While I can understand that some people might find 'Phanar' a derogatory term, so do some of us find 'diaspora' an equally unapatizing word, such as the "U" word that we dare not mention. One can argue in all these cases that they are to some degree accurate or applicable. Nevertheless, they are all used to deliver a certain degree of disrespect to the recipients.
Not that the feelings don't appear to be mutual, it would seem.
I think we all have our own preferred 'verbal sheds' where lots more of those slights come from.

Christ is Risen!
It will certainly be very interesting to see what things are said at this Conference.
One thing which interests me is the relationship, within the Greek diaspora, of the Homogenia and the converts in the Greek Church and how much of the concept and practice of Hellenism converts are expected to adopt into their lives..

From a non-Hellenic convert in the GOA: you don't have to learn Greek, or how to make Greek food (especially at food-festival time), or do Greek dancing (whenever there's a glendi), but it helps. The ethnic Greeks will never mistake you for a Greek, though, if you go the whole gamut and become a pillar of the parish, they'll mention, behind your back, that it's a shame you're not Greek.

Dear Cymbyz,
Been there, too.
I think that if the Patriarchate of Constantinople is going to gain the support of the local community in America for a unified jurisdiction under its omophorion, they are going to have to discuss this matter in a way that is convincing for non-Greeks.
One can certainly argue that the GOA in America has several 'ethnic jurisdictions' that enjoy relative if not complete freedom, but I think most American Orthodox are craving a Church without ghettos. We are looking for a truer sense of unity beyond, 'we'll let you keep that.' That isn't much different than what some of us think of the Roman Catholic arrangement for Eastern Catholics.
The big word in America is 'evangelization.' We don't like being a minority. If the definition of 'Hellenism' does not include a plan to convert Americans and break us out of a third-rate religious ghetto (to which most Americans confine us much to our own chagrine), then there will be no success in any efforts to convince people to follow Constantinople's, or any other senior church's lead for that matter.

You're certainly right about evangelism (good Greek word there). That's why our parish (St. Paul's, Irvine, CA) has invested considerable time and money helping the Metropolis of Tanzania build a parish church in Kobunshwi, and sponsor several domestic outreach programs, as well as a vigorous program of adult Christian education.

Fr. Steven and Dean are excellent leaders in that regard. My sincere hope is that these concerns be addressed, but I'm not too hopeful after receiving the DVDs from the Archons.
