For My Wife and Our Unborn Daughter
« on: May 03, 2010, 11:08:39 PM »
:) So we went to have a sonogram today, and it's a girl! :)

Please pray for the health of my wife and our little unborn daughter, who we have named "Mariyam Hosanna."

She is due in September.

Thank you!

Mnohaya Litya! God grant you many years!

Through the prayers of the Theotokos, may your wife have a safe and healthy pregnancy and delivery!

Many years.  Congratulations Gebre :)

EDIT--Oops, forgot to mention, I also love the name!

Ditto!

BTW, I suspected that "Mariyam" in English is "Mary" but I wasn't sure so I looked it up. It turns out, in Armenia it means Pomegranate, but that it is the Aramaic form of the Hebrew "Miriam"--the name of our Theotokos and meaning "Star of the Sea." In any case, congratulations to your wife and you. may the little one grow up singing the praises of her Lord and her parents!

Congratulations!

May the Lord have mercy on both girls in your life!  May your wife have a lovely and easy pregnancy and delivery.

May Mariyam Hosanna grow to be a wonderful Orthodox Christian, to the glory of God and her parents!

...and Lord have mercy and grant her Papa much patience!   ;)

Where did you read that?  The Armenian word for pomegranate (at least in my mom's dialect) is "noor," which also means light in Arabic.  Armenian for Mary is Mariam (similar to the Ethiopian.)  It was my great grandmother's name.  It's a beautiful name.   :)

I was thinking about sending you a PM: I was just enjoying a bottle of Armenian pomegranate wine, and was thinking of you.  Didn't taste very sweet as I was hoping, but good none the less (btw, no. I didn't drink the bottle in one sitting).

I came across this definition at the first baby name site that was listed in my Google search: http://www.babynology.com/meaning-mariyam-f4.html. It is indeed a beautiful name, especially when paired with Hosanna.

I don't know how I missed this thread. Congratulations! Indeed, a beautiful name. Is this name after the Mother of God or after one of the other Marys?

Many years!  Lord, have mercy.
"If you are going to serve the Lord, be prepared for times when you will be put to the test. Be sincere and determined. Keep calm when trouble comes. Stay with the Lord; never abandon Him and you will be prosperous at the end of your days. Accept whatever happens to you. Even if you suffer humiliation, be patient. Gold is tested by fire and human character is tested in the furnace of humiliation. Trust the Lord and He will help you. Walk straight in His ways and put your hope in Him. " Sir 2:1-6

Thank you brother (and thanks Rosehip and everyone else.) Yes, "Mariyam" is the Ethiopian name for the Theotokos.
