Blessed St. Athanasios Day!
« on: May 02, 2010, 03:18:00 PM »
From this morning's Orthros service:

"You were Orthodoxy's upright pillar, you held up the Church with godly dogmas, holy hierarch, divine Athanasios. For by preaching that the Son is coessential with the Father you humiliated Arius.

O devout father of the Faith, pray to God fervently and entreat Him to grant us His great mercy.

By your fiery dogmas is all the tinder of heresy utterly consumed, O all-glorious and wise. The insubordinate army of the heretics flounders in your profundity of thought, O devout Athanasios; and from day to day the assembly of the faithful prides itself in your theology and doctrines, and with a loud voice it honors you.

O devout Athanasius, by the splender of your divine discourses the whole Church is nobly beautified; and she adorns herself piously with beautiful ornaments; and she dutifully keeps your most festive memorial, and she honors you, the illustrious glory of the priesthood and the universal preacher in the defense of the Trinity.

With the staff of your dogmas you, O all-wise father, drove away from the Church of Christ all the spiritual wolves; and you protected her round about with words as with battlements, and presented her to Christ free of blemish and injury.

Therefore supplicate that He free from corruption and from dangers those who loyally now honor your ever-venerable memory."

Besime Ab, WeWolde, WeMenfesQidus, Ahadu Amlak,

Memory Eternal St. Athanasios! May we honor your memory by preserving the purity of Orthodox Truth and diligently opposing heterodox wolves and heretical schismatics!

"Whether it’s the guillotine, the hangman’s noose, or reciprocal endeavors of militaristic horror, radical evil will never be recompensed with radical punishment. The only answer, the only remedy, and the only truly effective response to radical evil is radical love."

From yesterday night's Vespers:

"Thou didst zealously train thyself in all virtue, O God-inspired; and with holy chrism anointed as a priest by the Good Spirit, thou truly wast a most sacred minister, a defender of the Faith, and a true shepherd to the flock. Wherefore, all the Church glorifieth and sacredly observeth they memorial, O Father Athanasius, while glorifying the Savior Christ."

The Coptic Church celebrates his feast in 13 days.

From the Coptic Doxology of St. Athanasius:

O you who are strong in managing the ship,
O you the distinguished fighter,
Who is victorious in the wars,
The luminous lamp.

The leader of orthodoxy
is Athanasius the Apostolic,
The instructor of the eloquent sheep,
That is for Christ.

Your truthful teachings
Pierced the heart of the heretics
Like a double-edged sword
By the power of the Trinity.

Every knee worshipped the Lord,
And every tongue praised Him.
The glory of God was announced
And filled the entire universe.

We therefore magnify you
Along with David the prophet,
For you are the priest forever
On the order of Melchizedek.

Hail to the great Patriarch,
Our father the saint Abba Athanasius,
Whose holy teachings
enlightened our minds.

Blessed are you indeed
Our saintly father, the patriarch
Saint Athanasius the Apostolic,
Beloved of Christ.

Pray to the Lord on our behalf
Our saintly father, the patriarch
Saint Athanasius the Apostolic,
that He may forgive us our sins.
Vain existence can never exist, for "unless the LORD builds the house, the builders labor in vain." (Psalm 127)

If the faith is unchanged and rock solid, then the gates of Hades never prevailed in the end.
