About 30 years ago, our choir at St Elias in Austin, Texas, learned and performed Christmas carols in public venues (such as malls) as an outreach. We sang some western carols but also some from Ukraine. We were very well received and even attracted some enquirers.
I have couple of questions to y'all:
1. Do you know of any Nativity carols from Greece, Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Ukraine, Belorus and/or Russia? If so, would you please point me to sources for sheet music?
2. Have you ever heard such carols sung in conjunction with or during the Divine Liturgy--say during the communion of the clergy?
Thanks in advance, Kyrill

1. Yes they do exist, there is a really nice one from Greece dealing with St. Basil and I would bet every country has one about St. Nicholas. Perhaps someone from those area has a link to them. 2. Yes I have heard of it being done but I would caution against it. Save it for after the service.

1. Do you know of any Nativity carols from Greece, Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Ukraine, Belorus and/or Russia? If so, would you please point me to sources for sheet music? There are a lot of Nativity/12 Days carols from all of those lands. Also, there are special carols for St. Basil's/New Year's and for Theophany. All are sung in front of people's houses for treats, etc. Many regions and islands have their own special carols. I'm sure the other thread has plenty of links, but here's a nice page that explains a few of the different Greek ones and has recordings as well: http://www.mmb.org.gr/page/default.asp?la=1&id=2321. 2. Have you ever heard such carols sung in conjunction with or during the Divine Liturgy--say during the communion of the clergy?
Yes. I've been to plenty of Romanian parishes and monasteries that do precisely that.

Yes. I've been to plenty of Romanian parishes and monasteries that do precisely that. The Carpatho-Russians and many Ukrainians likewise sing carols during the communion after the singing of the appropriate communion hymn for the feast.

Yes, here are some Ukrainian Hymns I grew up with: "Heaven and Earth""God of Ages"We sing both of the above during the course of the Christmas Liturgy. We would sing "Oh Who Loves St. Nicholas" on his feast day, Dec 19th.
