Check out the life of St. John Maximovitch, also known as St. John of San Francisco or St. John of Shanghai. He reposed in the 1960's and is venerated as a saint (and is my son's patron).

Fwiw, my patron saint Justin Popovich died the same year I was born, 1979 (though he hasn't been officially glorified yet, I don't think). There has also been talk of the possible sainthood of others who died since that time, such as Fr. Seraphim Rose (†1982), Elder Cleopa (†1998), etc.

He hasn't been glorified yet...unfortunately. I think the Serbian church is just inundated with tons of new saint requests because of the wars, communism & other things, there have been a lot of miracles, especially in Bosnia & Hercegovina. I really don't know of that many miracles associated with him, so that might be part of the issue. Has anyone heard of Fr. John Karastamatis & veneration to him? |

Archimandrite Sophrony of Essex, anyone? Some Finns venerate Fr. John of New Valamo and Archbishop Paul of Finland as a saints even though they are not formally canonized. I wouldn't be suprised if they some day are, though. |

Joseph the Hesychast may well be on the path to glorification. I have heard that he has already been adopted as a saint among the monks of Athos. He reposed in 1959.

There are some more modern Elders who I would consider Saints. There is Elder Cleopa, Elder Paisios the Athonite, Elder Joseph the Hesychast, Elder Porphyrios, Fr. Gheorghe Calciu, and the recently canonized St. George of Drama, and you could also check out the book Athonite Fathers and Athonite Matters by Elder Paisios where he writes about the holy elders who were his contemporaries. Let us not forget Fr. Daniel Sysoev, so recently martyred for his witness to Muslims.
Very true! He is a new martyr of the Church having suffered for our Lord only about five months ago. |
