This One's for You, Sergio!
« on: January 23, 2004, 12:17:16 AM »
Since this my 1,966th post, I figured I would post it in honor of Sergio Mendes.

Remember him?

Those who do will not have to ask what 1966 has to do with good ol' Sergio.

I was in elementary school, but I remember the music of Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66 on the radio.

Yeah, I'm getting old.

Ouch!

You are a baby!

Ask them if they remember Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66.

Tall and tan and young and lovely, the girl from Ipanema goes walking . . .

I know that song :)

Then you've heard Brasil '66, my friend.

Of course, I still remember the Mad Magazine lyrics (some of them, anyway):

Short and fat and bald and ugly, the guy from Jersey City goes walking . . .

I love bossa nova, but I thought the Girl from Ipanema was by Stan Gets, and Gilberto Joao.

If Senhor Mendes is the one in the dark jacket he looked a lot like me.

He may well have covered 'The Girl from Ipanema' but I'm fairly sure Jo+úo Gilberto and Antonio Carlos Jobim wrote it - they got the idea while girl-watching one day at, yes, the beach at Ipanema. JG sang on his recording of it in Portuguese, his then-wife Astrud sang in English and Stan Getz played sax.

Yeah, he's the one in the dark jacket.

I made a slight error.

Sergio Mendes did cover The Girl From Ipanema, but it was with the Bossa Rio Sextet and predates Brasil '66.

Sorry.

If you are interested in a listing of his work, check out http://www.brasil66.com/index.php .
