Bridegroom Service of Holy Thursday
« on: March 31, 2010, 08:35:12 AM »
Does anyone have the English translation of the Bridegroom Service for Holy Thursday (sung on Wednesday night)? My Holy Week book omits it since most parishes here and in America do the Holy Unction instead of the Presanctified and the Bridegroom Service.

Thanks!

You are not the first person to call this a Bridegroom service but I say this so everyone is clear the Orthros for Thursday, that is celebrated on Wednesday, is NOT a Bridegroom Orthros. The key characteristic of the Bridegroom Orthros is the singing of "Behold the Bridegroom cometh at midnight..." and at the service for Thursday this troparion is replaced by the "Apostles enlighten at the washing of the feet...". So please, correct people who call it a Bridegroom Orthros, including your priest.

Also as the service progresses it begins to take on characteristics of a Festal Orthros. The full canon is prescribed to be chanted. Lastly you will note that the prayer of St. Epharim is no longer said and the troparion of the day is used as an actual dismissal hymn.
