DECR Vice Chairman met with Russia's ambassador to Guatemala

3/25/2010

On March 24, 2010, Igumen Ryabykh, Vice Chairman of the MP's Dept. of External
Affairs, met in DECR's offices with Russia's Ambassador Extraordinary and
Plenipotentiary in the Republic of Guatemala, N.M., Vladimir.

During the extensive interview they discussed prospects of cooperation between
the Russian Orthodox Church and Guatemala in light of the meeting of His
Holiness Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia, Kirill, with Guatemalan President
Alvaro Colom Caballeros,  March 22, 2010 at the Christ the Savior Cathedral.
According N.M. Vladimir, meeting the Primate of the Russian Church made a strong
impression on the Guatemalan leader and his accompanying delegation.

The diplomat expressed a readiness to assist in increasing the presence of
Russian Orthodoxy in Guatemala. He described the activities of Holy Trinity
women's monastery under the Patriarchate of Antioch, the only Orthodox parish in
this Central American country, which cares for the and Russian-speaking
diaspora.  N.M. Vladimir also stated that in Guatemala there is a large group
of people, including representatives of the indigenous Indian population, ready
to embrace Orthodoxy.

Igumen Philip thanked the guests for being mindful of development of
cooperation between the Moscow Patriarchate and Guatemala. The Cleric offered to
organize a trip to Russia for Guatemalans wanting to adopt the Orthodox faith
so they couldВ familiarize themselves with church tradition and visit holy
places.

The meeting was also attended by members of the Secretariat for DECR abroad M.H.
Palacio [Miguel Palacio, who had earlier interviewed Metropolitan Jonah].

Does Moscow know that the EP is receiving them?

I think this is purely a political move on their part (Guatemala), and that's where I'll end my comments.
