I think in Thessalonians when it mentions "meeting the Lord in the air," it is actually a reference to Daniel chapter 7.  And "meeting the Lord in the air" doesnt mean we will meet Christ in the air then continue floating to heaven.  My understanding is that when a king was coming to visit your city/country in ancient times, people would go meet him half way, then walk back the rest of the way with him.  Similarly, when we "meet Christ in the air," we will come back to earth with him as he restores creation.

Is this idea Orthodox?
Even if we have thousands of acts of great virtue to our credit, our confidence in being heard must be based on God's mercy and His love for men. Even if we stand at the very summit of virtue, it is by mercy that we shall be saved.

— Chrysostom

Well that's how I read it, in any case.

Ah, the issues of dogmatizing a prophecy before it happens :)

That's how I understand it.
And FWIW, these are our Fathers too, you know.

Oh, seeing a thread started by our dear sister Martha brings back a lot of memories. May her memory be eternal!
