Advice needed please.

I plan to go to Ethiopia for ten days after Easter.

I want to make a pilgrimage rather than a tourist visit.

As you can see I am a 'Chalcedonian' Orthodox.

Does anyone have suggestions?

In Christ...

For what exactly?

In any case, see Axum, where the Ethiopians were converted (pre-Chalcedon) and where they keep what they claim is the Ark of the Covenant (no, you can't see it.  But you can look at the compound of the Church, behind the fence).

Lalibela is also a must since many Ethiopians make a pilgrimage there since it is considered a very holy city. It has it's famous stone churches (most famously the Church of St. George). If I ever go to Ethiopia, I would also like to visit the monastery at the top of Debre Damo though I have seen videos and pictures of it and the only way to get to the monastery at the top of the plateau is to climb a rope which can be difficult.

Are there any Chalcedonian churches in Ethiopia? Oh, by the way, not the Eastern "Catholic". I know they are Chaldedonian, but I meant Orthodox.

There are some. Their is an Eastern Orthodox Archdiocese under the Patriarchate of Alexandria headed in Aksum which has jurisdiction in Ethiopia, Eritrea, Djibouti and Somalia. It is headed by His Eminence Archbishop Petros. As to how many churches in Ethiopia, I cannot say.

PM brother AmdeBirhan. He just returned from a pilgrimage to Ethiopia where he recently got married! I'm sure he can give you some good advice.

Dear Aidan

You should drop Abba Seraphim an email. He is leading a group to Ethiopia next year I think, and will be accompanied by at least one Western scholar in Ethiopian studies. I believe he already has a good idea of where he will be visiting and how he will be travelling. If you ask him where he suggests going I am sure he would provide many good ideas.

God bless
