I can't make all of the scroll out, but enough that it is quoting John 1 "...I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, make straight the ways of the Lord...."

Above the lamb is "sheep of Thomas (?)....on...Lamb of God"

Under the head, on the right "By the design of the Temple of the Holy in...."

Question a friend, perhaps he did not do it; but if he did anything so that he may do it no more.
A hasty quarrel kindles fire,
and urgent strife sheds blood.
If you blow on a spark, it will glow;
if you spit on it, it will be put out;
                           and both come out of your mouth

Thank you, ialmisry!

Do you (or does anyone) know what the axe in the tree signifies? A friend asked me about the symbolism of some of these things and I was hopeful the labels would help, but if it's too hard to make out we might be out of luck.

[edit] I see you edited the post with more information, thanks

I can't make much of the writing at all there, but the axe is a reference to Matthew 3:10.

The icon is of St John the Baptist. The axe resting against a tree motif is common in his icons.
